fuck all that...  DIY is fun, but there are a lot of easy alternatives out there already.  If you spend $600 on beer and a cabinet, you could surely cough up $14 for something like this:

you do need to know some theory for this problem, but luckily i know it so i can just pass it on to you.

it has everything to do with how you're hooking it up. there are two possible ways to wire this circuit, they're called series and parallel connections. you can wikipedia them up for a more in depth understanding.

what you're probably doing is a series connection. that means all of lights are hooks up one after another between the two battery leads. ex;

+ --> light --> light ---> -

in this way the two lights i have wired between my + and - terminals are basically sharing the voltage. and because of that the current through each light is less than what it would be if they were in parallel. you see current is a function of voltage and resistance (v=ir) and each one of your bulbs is just a resistance in the circuit (a resistor; an element that limits current flow by using power [power=iv])

so lets say my two bulbs are both of equal resistance, say r=100 ohm and my battery is a 6v just like yours.

that means the total resistance through this series connection, this big loop you have, is 200ohm. that means i=6v/200ohm=0.03A=30mA (btw, if you want to use led's you have to make sure the current going through each one is no more than 20mA or they'll die). since the two bulbs are sharing the voltage (and they have the same resistance) the voltage drop across each bulb, or the about of voltage each bulb takes for itself is 3V. the math works out the same as above, each one takes 3v and each is 100ohm. 3/100=.03.

here is what would happen if you connection was parallel;

  ____light__
+ <___light___> -

ok, so that schematic is really bad looking. if you look this stuff up it'll make more sense and you'll see much better schematics. but basically the two bulbs are not sharing the voltage, this time they each see 6v since they each have their own loop. 6/100=0.06A or twice as much as before. the downside to having brighter lights is obviously the longevity of the battery. but when it's pulling 60mA per bulb that thing should last a while.

circuit theory gets kind of convoluted unless you study it step by step so forgive me if i'm not being clear. feel free to ask if you're confused.

Thanks a lot man!  It was a little confusing when I first read it :smile:, but I'm a pretty smart guy, so I picked it up fairly quick.

I just did a test run of the parallel circuit I just put together real quick and it's working great!  I have 4 bulbs in one connection and 2 bulbs in another on the same circuit and the 2 bulbs are shining brilliantly (the 4 bulbs are still kinda dull but i'll fix that)...  I Just have to rework all of this tomorrow morning to get it going.  I'll probably do 3 bulbs per connection, running on a 6 volt battery they'll get 2 volts per bulb, and do 4 different connections totaling 12 bulbs in the circuit (I originally wanted to do 8, but 12 will look better).

How long do you think one of those heavy duty 6 volt batteries will last with this kind of circuit? I do understand that the more connections you make, the more battery power it uses.

Thanks again man, appreciate that you took the time to help a stranger.

Cheers.

Will have some as soon as I finish building it and stocking it full of fine spirits.

Right now I'm working on getting the base done with the lighting, the rest of it is just putting the cabinet together.  The only pain in the ass I have left with this project will be drilling into the glass doors and hinging them without the drill cracking the glass, which I always seem to do at least once with glass projects.

Got it all figured out today, I got the 12 lights working off the one battery and it looks good so far.

Thanks guys!

I do not see the battery lasting very long seeing that it will most likely be on for a couple hours per use.  120v is the way to go.. sure you see a chord if you cannot conseal some legit electrical wiring.. but after a few months you will be fed up with messing around with changing batteries.

Look at the battery and it should have an AH rating (Amp Hour)  that is how many amps the battery will put out in one hour before dying.  You can roughly figure out how long it will last by doing some math.

E = Volts
I = Amps
R = Resistance

E = IxR    I = E/R  R = E/I

  E
______
I  /  R

I actually don't see me turning it on very often, just to click it on for a few minutes just to show people it lights up when I have company over.

If it was going to be something I was going to keep lit often, I definitely would have used a power chord to an electrical outlet.
