I can't decide if this statement (what is what) is a tautology, or a question. So shroomy philosophers, which is it?

What?
-------------------- Republican Values: 1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you. 2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child. 3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer. 4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Are the words "What is what" a question or a statement?

Tautology says I
Also the what is what could be either statement or question depending on the tone when said

Why do you think it is a tautology and not a question?

I say it because what is what implies there are some objects in front of you, therefore you should be able to say their name and ask what it's for. Tautology is redundant repetition of a word. Repeating what is redundant(unless you didnt know the name of the objects would that remark be justified as a question)

It could also be a question about what the word "what" is.

"I say it because what is what implies there are some objects in front of you"
It does? Can't it imply other things?
"Tautology is redundant repetition of a word. Repeating what is redundant(unless you didnt know the name of the objects would that remark be justified as a question) "
In a philosophical mood I might ask myself, pondering the meaning of simple words that are not questioned, "What is what?" It might seem ironic, but can't we inquire into the meaning of "what"? I would think we could ask that question in different words, but for the life of me I can't think of how to ask that same question without the word "what".

It seems like an interesting question, since we can't inquire into the word "what"s meaning without using the word itself to inquire. Can we ask this question? Can we answer it? It would seem that we could even have an understandable conversation where we used both, for example:
Hanz: What is what?
Franz: What is what.

The best kind of philosopher.
"To ask the question you could possibly say do you know the definition or current state of what?"
I guess the question I have is, is the "definition or current state of what" what "what" is? Let me repeat that. Is the definition or state of the word what, is that what or is what something that the definition and descriptions of its current state describe?

It is either a question or a tautology, but it is only the latter if you use the word 'what' in an 'incorrect' way, and it is only the former if you imply it with context or tone or a question mark.
The word 'what' needs to refer to something, it means nothing by itself.
However the word 'what' might have recently been used and so it is ok to ask "what is what?" if you are asking "what do you mean by your use of the word 'what'?"

"What is what," either as a question or as a statement, is completely meaningless.
It's like a knife trying to cut itself. Or a fire which cannot burn itself.
You can't recoil the logic (any logic) upon itself without resulting in paradox. You need to assume a "nonsensical" basis off of which to reason. But when you try to validate something by itself, asking 'what' is by using 'what' you've gotten nowhere, and nowhere fast.
What is what, whether a question or statement, is like going to the dictionary and looking up "what is" and finding that it reads 'what exists." Then you look up "what exists" and you find "what is." Reason/logic cannot validate itself. To even ask or state "what is what" assumes that you already know "what" you're talking about to a certain degree.
