Introduction and a couple questions
    #14278284 - 04/12/11 02:19 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hey everyone. Just thought I'd give a quick intro and say what a great forum this is! My friend has been interested in Mycology for several years (is actually quite interested in pursuing this as a career eventually) and recently decided, since conditions are ideal, to have a shot at growing a batch for research purposes : )

My friend placed an order for B+, Cambodian, and received a free "AF" syringe. I've looked around a bit and can't seem to find much about this particularly strain, but that it might be South American? Does anybody have a guess?

The other thing friend noticed was that the Cambodian and B+ syringes both have visible Mycellial growth; The B+ actually has quite a lot of what I'm guessing to be mycelial growth clumped together with black spores. The growth in the Cambodian syringe is just a barely visible white mycelial floater blob.

Now I've read that this is fairly common and nothing to worry about (especially since I ordered from a sponsor). I've read that this can actually be beneficial and produce faster colonizing jars and I'm curious about this. Friend was thinking of perhaps making a LC with some of the spore solution, but this is an area he has yet to research much so we'll  see. Is it necessary to really break up that mycelial web in the syringe before using? I don't see much of anything that vibrates laying around the apartment and thwacking it with my finger doesn't do anything.

He's planning on heading out tomorrow to pick up pint/quart jars, WBS, a tote or something to make a glovebox, maybe a small drill kit since he doesn't have access to one, and possibly the Presto 23 quart pressure cooker from wally world (not his first choice to buy from, but w/e) as he's put in quite a lot of time reading up on all of this and ready to get things in motion!

thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help. I'll keep yall updated

LC isn't too hard to make with a glovebox.  Just read a few of the teks on here and find out what works for you.  Shake the syringe before using unless you intend to use it all, then it doesnt matter..

Its a good idea to simply shake a syringe before flame and then use. This allows the spores and in your case the living mycelium to be in the syringe evenly and helps insure that what you are injecting is not just sterile water.

Since the spores are so small all, most of what you notice will be clumping, but shaking really does allow spores to spread out within a syringe.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure the "AF" strain I was asking about is actually the Africa Transkei strain

Pretty stoked about that!

Also, since this is my friends first grow, would you guys recommend using Pint jars over Quart jars? He intends to use WBS and probably a coir mix down the line, but was wondering if smaller jars might be more fool proof for a beginner, contamination wise. Hell, I guess he'll just go with Quart Jars and up his sterilization game

peace

Just some advice.....Use the search to look for a good GLC tek (Grain Liquid Culture).  With a regular LC you will have no idea what you are colonizing or what is hiding in the mix until you inoculate some jars.......GLC's kicks LC's ass every day of the week.....With a GLC you will be almost 100% sure it will be good....

Ok, so went out today and bought a Presto 16qt pressure canner/cooker, 12 Ball regular mouth Quart jars, a 10lb bag of Pennington "Classic", a Sterelite 58qt tub which i'd like to use for a cheap glovebox, a small drill, polyfill, and some sterilization stuff. Only thing I need now is tyvek and some aluminum foil (I have coffee filters for an outside dust cover and aluminum foil already).

Couple questions:

I have zero experience with a pressure cooker. I'm reading up on it now and plan to do a test run or two prior. FOR ANYONE THAT OWNS THE PRESTO 16 QT OR SIMILAR SIZE:

1: What's the best method of loading quart jars per this size and how necessary do you think it would be to raise the bottom rack up a bit to prevent water boiling over and soaking my grains? Ideally I wont fuck up the first time doing it with grain but I guess I'm just looking for advice for anyone that's used a similar size?

2. The brand of WBS I bought is Pennington Classic and says "Vitamin Enriched Variety Mix". I didn't even consider this when purchasing, do you guys think it'll be fine to use and has anyone used the "Classic" brand by Pennington? The ingredients are as follows:

Milo, White Proso Millet, Wheat, Sunflower Seed, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Vegetable Oil.

3. I'm basically looking for the most FOOL PROOF method of getting the right moisture with my WBS, and so far Agar's advice to just soak and observe a 20-30 percent increase in size seems fairly fool proof and doesn't require simmering. I might actually simmer for about 15 minutes prior to soaking, because I dont want to potentially oversoak.

Thanks for any help guys, it's a bit intimidating at times with so much fucking information floating about.

Thats fine as long is there are no added fungicides, probably not.  Usually the more expensive brands are the ones that have them, but you can always call the company and ask.  I used Doc_Ts WBS tek and it worked fine for me.  Not too many ways you can mess up WBS i soaked for 48 hours on accident and then simmered anyway.  Didn't get mushy, didn't contam, the mycelium loves it.  Gypsum is a great additive for anything though remember that, i would definetely add some gypsum/  You can find it in hardware stores as dry wall.

You don't need to raise the jars nemore than the trivet rack that comes with the pc. You only need an inch of water or so.

That bird see is fine apart from being expensive. Sounds like you've got the prep under control. Just remember u want it to come out al dente. So if you simmer, let it dry off well so it's not too wet. If you don't simmer remember that a good amount of moisture will get absorbed into the grains during cooking. I don't simmer, but it took a few times to figure out the perfect moisture level.
