Organic Certification 6

We just got our final state organic inspection and passed with no issues. What a great feeling this is, after 2 years of construction and planning! When I get time, I'll try to write an article about all the hoops that had to be jumped through to make it happen.
I had to file over 20 pages of forms and other paperwork, $700 in fees, plus this final inspection. They say it should take about a week to get our certificate in the mail, and then we can advertise our mushrooms and substrate blocks, etc., as "Certified Organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture". Woot! RR

Congrats RR! I wish you much continued success! Thanks for paving the way for all of us. You truly are an inspiration and deserve all that you ask for and more in life. I hope 20 years from now I have half the knowledge that you have about mushrooms.
Hows the state forest thing panning out with the natives just to be way off topic?

If I build another one, it will be all concrete. I'm in talks with the county about putting in a much larger mushroom farm. The problem is, the county is broke, I'm broke, and grant money has all but dried up. I'll probably just have to run this one for a few years and see how it goes. It's time to get to making money for a change instead of the last two years of spending it. RR

Do you have to use organic rye berries? Did you have to show or aver you're using sawdust from non-treated wood? I'm wondering how picky The Man was about your spawn and substrate to consider your mushrooms organic.
Thanks, Ed

Extremely picky. I had to show a copy of the actual organic certificate for the grains, not just the label on the package that said 'organic rye berries'. You can get copies of these certificates from any supplier selling certified organic products. It's one of the hoops.
Ditto for the sawdust. I get some from a local rancher and the rest comes from trees I'm thinning on my own property. Both of us had to sign statements certifying that no prohibited substance has been applied to the trees in the preceding three years, nor was any prohibited substance used on the trees post harvest.
Mined calcium sulfate(gypsum) is on the approved mineral supplement list, so needs no certification.
The biggest part of the inspection was all the paperwork and documentation to prove we really are only using certified organic materials in our substrates. Inspecting the actual process only took an hour or so. RR

congratulations! Will look forward to reading that article someday. Thanks for jumping through all the hoops and making the investments to get where you're at. I'm one of those people that does pay double for quality, fresh, organic food. Organically certified mushrooms have definitely been missing from the PNW. How far are your mushrooms distributed RR? The co-ops and are gonna love your certification
