Found a monster in my new garden
    #14274669 - 04/11/11 08:29 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Was shoveling some dirt to plant some raspberry plants in my backyard when this guy jumps out of a shovelful of dirt.

He's bigger than a quarter. Huge fangs! WTF!? In MY garden. I guess hes gonna eat bad bugs though, right? Should I let him go or hell no?

I'm thinking about putting him in a jar or something and feeding it crickets. So its a red trap door spider? I kinda thought it was a black.

WTF... that would have scared the shit out of me. Let that bitch go, but release it somewhere other than your yard, unless you like giant spiders crawling on your toes.

I would let him go, how would you like it if someone came and destroyed your house and then put you in jail for no reason? Plus he will help keep insects from raping your raspberries

Ya I'm very seriously considering the implications on my karma... But did you see how big it's fangs are? Eh there are probably like 50 more out there... I need to start wearing more than sandals.

all spiders are territorial, if you remove him from his "mating/hunting zone" several lesser spiders will compete for his zone (if it is male, looks like a male)if they are commonly found where you live each one will have a patch which they mark with pheremones, seen a cool Atenborough documentary on spiders not long ago

Aren't trap doors the more venomous spiders out there?  I'd probably relocate for fear of being bit myself.

I love spiders. I like to let some live in my house if I can. Gets rid of lots of unwanted pests like ants and moths. If this guy does not make a web, let him back in your garden. He'll kill the nasty bugs!

Jesus it's like something out of Starship Troupers.  How toxic is this bastard?  I love animals and beneficial insects/arachnids... but I have to admit, spiders are one of the few things that really gives me the willies.  Spiders and wasps.  Ironically spiders eat wasps.  I let spiders live, 99% of the time (unless it's like a Black Widow in my house), but I kill all wasps on sight.

Not 100% true. My dad let a dirt dobber build it's nest in his ceiling once. She ate all the spiders in his house and she'd just fly around unbothered. He finally decided the big mud nest looked dirtier than it was beneficial. We broke open the nest cells and counted some 70 something spiders, most of which were smaller enough they could've been anywhere (boots, pants, etc) and about 15 black widows and a few hobos too.

Some spiders are cool to have, cohabitation-wise. Not all, I'd probably be scared of this one also. They all contribute to what is, and that's why I usually kill all indoor pests except the ones that help with indoor pests. Moths are terrible for our house, lots of room and lots to live off of. We have ants that try to barge in all the time, in our bedroom. When spiders walk in, i usually welcome them and feed them when I can. They are paying rent by keeping the more annoying bugs out. I kept one for a few months in my bathroom. I fed him, blew hits at him, he was my buddy. Some kind of web spider, which basically are the only ones that manage to thrive in households usually. Me and my wife eventually named him "Ding Dong". Eventually, we lost sight of that bathroom for the winter and he died. No corpse was found yet, since we didn't clean that part yet =D
So I guess what I'm trying to say is some spiders are cool, some are scary. Your spider looks pretty crazy =D

there are wasps that feed exculicely of spiders... there are even wasps that are known to kill huge tarantulas... so im pretty sure wasps own spiders anytime

Shit, I said spiders eat wasps didn't I?  I meant wasps (especially dirt dobbers) eat spiders.  Dumb typo.  I guess spiders could eat wasps if they got trapped in a web.  But yeah. I'm pretty sure the match up is like 90:10 favoring wasps.

Wasps are pretty bad ass. I'm gonna catch a bunch of manti this summer and let them go in my garden. Those are amazing creatures.
