Marijuana Use Associated With 'Superior' Cognitive Performance In Schizophrenic Patients, Study Says

April 7, 2011 - norml

Toronto, Ontario: Schizophrenic patients with a history of cannabis use demonstrate "superior neurocognitive performance" compared to non-users, according to the findings of a meta-analysis to be published in the journal Schizophrenia Research.

Investigators at the University of Toronto, Institute of Medical Sciences, performed a meta-analysis to determine the magnitude of the effect of cannabis consumption on cognition in subjects with schizophrenia. Eight studies met inclusion criteria, yielding a total sample of 942 subjects. Three hundred and fifty six of these participants were cannabis users with schizophrenia, and 586 were patients with no history of cannabis use. Neuropsychological tests were grouped into seven domains: general cognitive ability and intelligence; selective, sustained and divided attention; executive abilities; working memory and learning; retrieval and recognition; receptive and expressive language abilities and visuo-spatial and construction abilities.

Authors determined, "[R]elated statistics of differences in performance ... all suggest superior cognitive functioning in cannabis-using patients as compared to non-using patient."

Researchers stopped short of attributing subjects' cannabis use to the improved outcome, noting that patients with superior cognitive skills may simply be more likely to acquire cannabis than subjects with lesser abilities.

They wrote: "Given that all studies that met inclusion criteria employed a cross-sectional methodological design, poses a challenge and limits the interpretation of our findings. That is, it is difficult to determine whether it is cannabis itself that triggers alterations in neuropsychological functioning or if drug-using patients represent a subset of the schizophrenia population who exhibit better neurocognitive performance."

Authors concluded, "[C]annabis likely has modest ... effects on neurocognitive function in schizophrenia. ... Longitudinal designs studying the effects of cannabis abstinence or acute challenges are needed to parse the effects of cannabis per se on cognition in schizophrenia."

That's been my observation.... If it caused psychosis, then why don't those numbers more closely relate to regular Cannabis use?

I have a lack of cognitive function when I do not smoke cannabis.
        This is a good study.

I don't know if I have a delusional disorder. When it comes to taking classes and have smoked before possibly just a tad high, I have ranges of 90% in History and Chemistry.    and the rest of the day just goes down  in Shakespeares English and an Elementary reading class.. The A teachers are facilitators who could have psychology experience.
The Lousy teaching's a factor and myself being choosy in subconcho and not learning.
More studies like this and everybody be out of debt in no time.

I hope this leads to a world that can Truly function.

it says that its only if they patients smoked weed before they got the disorder"" and even then it all stems down to reaction time meh or something something

smoking pot is not goin to help you get smarter unless your a lazy shit who watches tv all the time otherwise

it says if they smoked during the onset of the disorder, they had less cognitive impairment compared to smoking after the onset. but the group smoking after still had less cognitive impairment than the group that didn't smoke at all. otherwise it wouldn't say

"these findings suggest that patients with schizophrenia or FEP with a history of cannabis use have superior neuropsychological functioning compared with nonusing patients."

Quote:

and even then it all stems down to reaction time

where do you see that? it says

"performed better on tests of visual memory, working memory, and executive functioning"

Quote:

smoking pot is not goin to help you get smarter

it's not about whether it will make anyone smarter, but whether it can help someone with schizophrenia

I have a friend who is Schizo and I must say when he doesn't take his medicine and is bugging out, I smoke him out and he calms down, doesn't need his medicine for the time of the high lasting, which makes him snap back to being coherent again.

just because something can boost iq it doesn't automatically mean it can help schizophrenic people

you can't attribute it to being relaxed and focused because only patients that weren't currently using were studied. and where does it say anything about how many grams they smoked a week.

in the source i posted

im not saying its wrong im just saying what are the long term effects and is there a chance people who had schizo symptoms actually prolonged them by smoking weed... which means yea so this needs more study

i read it and the only reference it made to the amount used was

"However, while heavy cannabis use has been associated with cognitive deficits in long-term users, studies among patients with schizophrenia have been contradictory"

i only read the abstract though, maybe that's why.

My brother has schizo-affective bipolar disorder, he's smoked since he was 12. At times in the past, before he was diagnosed, smoking would often times make him really "spacy", philosophical and just a little too far out, probably the first symptoms of his disease showing. Now it's just the opposite, it seems to calm and relax him in when he smokes a small amount. Larger amounts would make him uncomfortable I believe.
