Storing Dried Poppy Pods & Germinating Seeds
    #14271561 - 04/11/11 10:27 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, first time posting in this section.  My questions are:

I have a ton a dried poppy pod seeds and have to store them in my outdoor tool shed that receives a lot of moisture and gets really hot on sunny days.  Do you have any tips for how to wrap them up (i.e. plastic bags, paper bags, etc...) to keep them from receiving moisture?  Will the heat hurt the seeds?

Thanks!

1) heat and unwanted humidity is bad for both chemicals and organic matter. either dry them then store in a paper bag or find a better place to store them into. this just takes some common sense I think

2) of course you can thin out seedlings, why couldn't you? you can either keep the faster growing ones and pick away the others or transplant them when they're too crowded with a little care and a fork or toothpick.

We successfully thinned a few of ours out only yesterday! Same dilemma, just started them out in too close proximity..

thinning out is a great idea so your poppies have room to grow to be strong and potent. i used grodan cubes to germinate. easy transplant because you can just stick that sucker in the soil once they sprout.
