Wonderful, Thanks Inski.
Those Landcare collections have had me intrigued since I saw them, especially the 2nd one from the potted plant. Cooper is very skilled, but probably does not know Psilocybe as well as other groups. Also I doubt that he is familiar with your work in postings here.
I knew about your sect. Aztecorum from your ealier posts on this. However I didn't know about the other one from potted plants!
Have you given your species some informal names, as you have for P. subsec.? that would make it easier to talk about them in this forum
New Zealand, home of a whole bunch of weird Psilocybe!!!

Hey, just thought maybe that Landcare one is from a plant from that nursery where you worked. Took me a while to make the obvious connection....

I genuinely give up. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get out and do a little hunting but it's getting tiresome.
Over the last two years I have spent a good 50 hours searching. Perhaps, 20 hours or so of good study into Psilocybe semilanceata & Psilocybe subcubensis and I know them inside out. In these 50 hours I have found 3 Psilocybe subcubensis and I have NEVER seen a liberty cap...
It's genuinely upsetting

I wouldn't be too upset, I've never heard of anyone finding P. subcubensis anywhere in NZ!
I would've spent around the same amount of time as you before I found anything, when I started I knew no one with any information or experience on finding Psilocybes, and had to learn it all from scratch too.
Give up if you want, but do keep in mind that all your hard work and effort will finally pay off when you do make a good find!
Out of curiosity based on the mushrooms you're looking for, whereabouts in NZ are you based?

Harden up man. I spent longer than that, and likely many others did too Never seen a lib, but then I don't live in the right part of NZ. Subcubensis aren't found in NZ at all; you must mean Subaeruginosa. They are actually pretty easy to find when you get familiar with them, and you wonder what the hell you were doing all those fruitless hours. Have a look at xthrx's finds on last years thread... mindblowing quantities!

Should probably stop being a pansy! Must be the English in me.
I do have a question though and I hope it's within the constraints as I need a little direction;
- I'm in an earthquake city, am I to have more luck with "gold caps" in your opinion? It's hard to know, seems I have plenty of farm land out back.
Also, cheers!

If you are spending that long hunting without results then you must be looking in the wrong areas

Two or three forests, pines, wood, sand, mud... I'll walk right off the beaten track. There is trees, bush, water etc. What else is to know?
I have just found a large area where cattle graze, green grass and cow pats. Maybe I should look for libs?

listen here buddy, if u dont know the diffence between sub-cubensis and Subaeruginosa, then there is no point giving up because u are obviously a noob, no offence, but it takes a certain degree of noobism to come up with that shit u just told us. So, do ure research (properly), and then go out and have fun in one of the most mushroomy countries there are. Don't get angry at ureself man, its all about knowledge, keep trucking or watever kiwis say

Hey, thanks for being a cock. I know I'm a "noob". I apologize for letting my frustrations get the better of me, but it's extremely hard to get a clear precise answer about any matters I find contradictory on the web (Where, when, etc.) I don't need someone who can't grammatically complete a sentence passing on home truths.
I KNOW what I am looking for. All I wanted was some general advice on a species I am not so familiar with, NOT computer game terminology.

When?
Right now, and for the next couple of months, maybe longer if you are lucky/experienced.
Where?
Woodchip mulched gardens, particularly council gardens as they mulch all their greenwaste (esp. tree prunings) and mulch their garden beds with it. Around car parks, traffic islands, botanic gardens, motorway surrounds etc etc
Subs (subaeruginosa/goldtops) fruit (ie grow mushrooms) in autumn when lower temps (night) signal them. The mycelium needs plenty of moisture at this stage, so fruiting tends to happen after a good rain and a cold southerly.
The mycelium consumes wood, so they are located with their food source (not in paddocks/cowshit etc).
Libs are quite different.

Are you in Wellington? Has a rep for weraroa too.
Bear in mind that you are competing with others, it's not just finding the spot, it's finding it first and keeping it secret / not getting busted raiding blatent patches and other shenanigans. In other words it's far better to get called a noob on a forum than to get called a noob by the cop arresting you for raiding that council patch downtown.
If you're in Auckland then it's pretty tough going just at the moment not enough moisture. Hamilton felt like it would be underway - a lot colder and mistier (H2O saturated air w/ condensation).
Early bird catches the worm :>
p.s what city are you in?

Hi FreshShrooms,
I'm in Christchurch. We had some wet/cold about a week ago. I was able to head out the last couple of days without luck. Thank you for the informative reply also, it was very much appreciated.
