Alcohol Tolerance?
#14275533 - 04/11/11 10:48 PM (12 years, 9 months ago) |

Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone had any experience with lowering ones alcohol tolerance? I recently went on a break since I was drinking to much (4 times a week or more) and was hopefully going to lower my tolerance. I just don't know much about how alcohol tolerance works. I'll be having my first alcohol this Saturday after a two week break. Hopefully I'll be able to cop a buzz off significantly less.

two weeks wouldn't be long enough. give it three months and depending on how long you've been a drinker your tolerance will be almost 0 again

Only been drinking 4 times a week? That's not a whole lot. How much do you drink on those 4 days?

Depends on how long you've been drinking for... 2 weeks is decent for weed tolerance, and I think you'll definitely notice a difference, but it won't be the same as if you took a month break.
1 month of no drinking and you'll get smashed off of 5 shots

It sounds like everyone is just throwing out random answers, does anyone have first hand account of this? And I think getting drunk 4 times a week for at least 2 years now is heavy drinking. How much do some of you think is heavy drinking? haha And I've noticed when I've taken just week breaks my tolerance definitly drops but not as significantly as I wanted. I'll report back here Sunday after I drink and let you guys know if my tolerance was lowered or if it was roughly the same.

Well, that's why I specifically asked how much you were drinking on those 4 days. 4 beers a week is NOT heavy drinking.
I usually have 4 drinks a day, but I never get drunk. I'm never more than slightly buzzed, because I space them out over several hours. I wouldn't consider that heavy drinking either.

getting drunk 4 times a week is a LOT. my answer is from personal experience... i typed you out a huge paragraph about it last night but decided not to post it as i've quit drinking..
give it 2-3 months, i'm serious, you'll notice a massive decrease in tolerance. what else do you have going on in your life that's so pressing you can't give up teh sauce for a couple months..?

It does not matter of the spacing of the drinks... its still heavy drinking to have 4 glasses a day, every day. You may not think its heavy drinking cuz you don't get drunk but that isn't true.. its still poison and when you drink your body prioritizes to metabolize the alcohol and acetate over many functions
Alcohol is very rough on the body and stomach lining, and is more intoxicating to the ladies. You may not be getting as intoxicated but its still fucking up your normal body function

An alcoholic that doesn't get drunk. That's pretty funny.
I guess the definition of alcoholic is extremely variable, depending on who's saying it. But if you don't get withdrawals from stopping, I don't think you're an alcoholic. Just like I don't think you're a heroin addict if you don't ever nod, and don't get withdrawals from stopping.

i don't believe smoking weed is damaging to your lungs at all. ok maybe a little bit, but i've been a HEAVY smoker for awhile and never had even the slightest hint of lung problems/decreased lung capacity. EXCEPT for a 6 month period where i was smoking meth/cigarettes everyday
seriously though, i think humans are meant to smoke weed and i believe there are natural remedies/herbs and thangs' on this earth we can use to easily mitigate the very minor damage to the lungs weed may cause
alcohol feels good to me for about 20 minutes tops if i smash about 7 shots, after that i just feel stupid and regretful. much better ways to get your enjoyment out of life

Smashing 7 shots would make me spin and then puke.
I might accept it if you said "humans are meant to EAT weed" but humans are not supposed to SMOKE anything.
You think covering your lungs in tar causes very minor damage? You're sorely mistaken. I have much more severe physical damage from smoking pot than I have from drinking. I don't ever smoke cigarettes.

Topic kind of got derailed there.. I'm wondering though why would you need a full two months to lower alcohol tolerance?? Especially when any other drug is two weeks or so max? Doesn't seem accurate, of course everybody's body is different. I'm assuming that when I drink Saturday I'm going to get smashed off of considerably less then I usually require..then I'm gonna go at least another week to two weeks after that before I drink again....hopefully.

I drink 3-4 times a week and still get buzzed off 2 drinks or so.
I find that hard alcohol always get me buzzed quickly too. As in... I take a sip and almost immediately feel it. (I guess this is because it is absorbed through the esophagus.)

haha shit I know the feeling I was getting there and figured I probably needed a break, I might just give it up altogether if I'm going to be stuck drinking enormous quantities to achieve a decent buzz. Plus it was starting to really kill my wallet. (main reason I stopped actually)

Their does not seam to be tolerance going away after a break. You want to get more drunk quicker then drink on an empty stomach. i am drunk now :P

I get that after a sip of anything. It's probably 80 percent mental and 20 percent alcohol. I get "drunk" or "buzzed" off my first sip pretty much.

I don't get that after a sip of beer or wine. But after a lot of drinking, I'm sure some of it is psychosomatic.
I think another problem here lies in the definition of "buzzed." I have a feeling you guys want to get somewhere closer to plastered... Which is something I'd never try to do. So I don't see a problem drinking all the time.

I love the initial rush I get from alcohol. I call it the shivers and it feels good as fuck.
I'm an alcoholic though and I know of no one else that feels the way I do after I take a shot. It is seriously like an orgasm.
Why lower the tolerance? Alcohol is cheap... just up the dose

In the past I've coughed up black mucus, I get occasional lung pain, and I can't even get up a flight of stairs without needing to catch my breath. I'm 115 pounds, so I'm not obese or anything. I don't have any damage from alcohol that shows any symptoms whatsoever.

Yeah, people cough up black mucus and get lung pain from being out of shape.
I go to the gym 4 times a week, and have been doing so for years. I also do an hour of yoga before bed each night.
I do 45 minutes of cardio each time I go to the gym. I get my heart rate to 180-200 bpm for 45 minutes 4 times a week, and have been doing so for years. Any normal person would be in extremely good shape under those conditions.

Damn, that sounds pretty bad.
If I were you I'd switch to a vaporizer or just stop smoking altogether.
I've been smoking for 7ish years and have never had anything at all like that. My lungs can take a pretty good workout, while most of friends that smoke cigarettes are dying.
Liver damage takes longer to show itself, but it's a pretty sure thing with any consistent long term drinking. The certainty of weed causing serious lung damage is more up in the air, if you ask me.

Some of my friends are dying of cancer because i grew up in this litte town dubbed radium city. There was even a documentary about it. WhenI was in highschool, there were all these fenced off radioactive sites where radium was done. They even made a documentary about it called "Radium City" Glad I only spent a few years there.

ok so you blame pot for coughing up black mucus?? You realize you would be the only documented case right? Have you ever read real research on cannabis smoke? Sounds like you have really shitty lungs and probably shouldn't smoke anything at all. I'm not saying smoking pot is benign but for real man? lol you would have to smoke 20 joints a day everyday for quite some time to get physical symptoms from smoking pot at such a young age... basically what I'm saying is quit pot and I bet you still have all your lung ailments. Blame something else, pot already has a bad enough rep without ppl like you spreading misinformation.

Smoke turns black when it condenses. Do your pipes ever accumulate resin? Resin is just smoke that has condensed. The exact same process happens in your lungs. Tar is formed by burning any organic matter in a reaction called pyrolysis. Smoking pot puts tar in your lungs, and there's no way around it.
I love pot. I very much enjoy it, and I'm not looking to give it a bad reputation. But you have to be reasonable. If you don't think it's detrimental to your health to smoke ANYTHING, you're fucking naive.
I would like to get a vaporizor, but I don't have 200$ laying around.

I believe it has been shown that the lungs have the ability to "cough up" (I forget the medical word) marijuana tar much more easily than tobacco tar. And tar in and of itself is not that cause of cancer or anything...
I'm just saying... Coughing up black shit is probably a good thing. At least it's not in your lungs.

Oh, I definitely prefer to cough it up than leave it in my lungs. I was referring to his claim that I was the only person to ever cough up anything black after smoking pot. That's ludicrous.
I usually don't cough it up until about a week of not smoking though.
But once again, we're off topic.

Dudette.
You just admitted she was right too by saying that smoking is bad. I'm pretty sure that was her only point.

good thing they had the fences there to keep people

owls said: two weeks wouldn't be long enough. give it three months and depending on how long you've been a drinker your tolerance will be almost 0 again
This is true. Last January, 2010, I stopped drinking for about 155 days. I was a pretty heavy drinker before the break from drinking (I'd drink 6 beers before going to the bar just to catch a little buzz) and when I finally started drinking in late May, I drank 3 craft beers at a cookout and I felt a little drunk... three craft beers before the break and I would've been very mildly buzzed.

seriously though, i think humans are meant to smoke weed and i believe there are natural remedies/herbs and thangs' on this earth we can use to easily mitigate the very minor damage to the lungs weed may cause
alcohol feels good to me for about 20 minutes tops if i smash about 7 shots, after that i just feel stupid and regretful. much better ways to get your enjoyment out of life

hmm I'm getting so many mixed responses some say 2 weeks is plenty others 3 months is barely long enough.. I guess everyone reacts very differently to alcohol and tolerance in general. I guess I'll find out on my own and see what happens. I have a good feeling I'm going to be getting pretty drunk compared to how drunk I was getting.

Your tolerance for substances goes up and down depending on what drug and how severe the addiction is.
If you drink 20 beers in one night and get hammered, you're going to need 30 beers the next night to get just as hammered. If you don't drink again for another week after the first night of 20 beers, 20 beers will likely make you the same amount of drunk, if you drink 20 beers a night they will start to affect you less and less, if you stop for 2 weeks after a 20 beer a day habit, you will definitely see a difference in tolerance levels the next time you drink 20 beers. If you quit drinking for 3 months, you're going to have a lot lower tolerance for ethyl alcohol. 2 weeks, you may notice some difference, but not much, but like I said, it depends how much and how often you drink.

I think it has more to do with body type than anything judging by the highly variable answers were seeing.

Well sure enough after taking a much needed two week break from drinking and then drinking I found....pretty much no difference in my tolerance O well I'm gonna keep drinking to a minimum for awhile longer and see if perhaps after a couple months I'll notice a difference, not to hopeful tho. I believe Alcohol tolerance has a lot to do with genetics, body type etc. rather than actual consumption (obviously consumption does have something to do with it)

well there was like 10 conflicting ideas about it so I figured I'd start with the lowest possible number and work from there to get a real number not just an idea..I think alcohol tolerance differs from other drug because of how the liver metabolizes it and converts it unlike some other drugs? I really have no idea and can't really find any medical papers on the subject.

there are so many variables that go into play (personal metabolism/body composition, how long/heavy the user has drank, health of liver/other vital organs, living habits, etc..)
so it's really kinda up in the air. give it a few months and you'll feel like it's lower cuz your liver will clear out
