Effects of 5HTP long term?
    #14275421 - 04/11/11 10:29 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone know the effects of 5HTP if one were to take it long term or for an extended period of time? Is there anything to be cautious of? So far all I can find is that is possibly has damaging effects on the liver and may cause kidney stones if take long term. I'm just really curious, anyone know?

i really wish supplement manufacturers were kind enough to list the dangers on the label.

WARNING! MAY CAUSE IRREVERSIBLE HEART DAMAGE!

we're not meant to take 5-htp into our diets. our livers metabolize much of 5-htp into serotonin which doesn't cross the blood brain barrier. thus causing some buildup of serotonin in the bloodstream, which is cardiotoxic.

the above is mostly just theorized by scientists, but i know of no studies that have been done at all for surveying heart damage. so i don't think it's safe to assume that it's a safe supplement.

Yep, heart problems.  Same has been shown of many SSRIs that wound up not being quite as "selective" as previously thought.

I've only ever taken 5-htp after having taken MDMA in order to restore some of the lost serotonin.

Back when I was taking way too much MDMA, I was getting really bad headaches after each experience -- but whenever I popped a 5htp pill the headache would completely disappear within 20-30 minutes. Other than that I don't take 5htp for any other reason. I have a full bottle of 5htp right now sitting on my desk that I will not touch until I eat some quality MDMA shard...oh yes, I am looking forward to this summer...

That's the only time I have ever had it too is after MDMA. I was wondering more for a friend who suffers from bipolar disorder. It has seemed to help with him, but he wouldnt ever take it long term because he didn't want to rely on it and deplete himself of naturally producing seratonin. Anyhoo....just got me wondering...because I've never heard of anyone taking 5HTP daily or on a long term basis and I was just wondering why.

Thanks for the tips though:thumbup:
