Identification of a shroom
    #14275377 - 04/11/11 10:22 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys,
I wanted some quick help with identification.
I think this is a white chantrell but I wanted to get an more experienced opinion.
This was found in my parents sitting room today. Apparently there is a crack in the brick outside allowing rainwater to get in.

I'm not sure where the spore came from as I didn't think this variety grew in Utah.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

HA! That is frickin' cool man! Looks like your parents have Oysters growing in their living room! :crazy2:

Seriously.. some folks get some amazing fungi luck - Psilocybes in the Nurseries, Oysters in the Living rooms.. I want THIS luck!

Enthusiastic crowd!

I looked at Clitocybe sp pictures, doesn't look like that. Because the fins go all the way down the stems.
I also looked at Pleurotus ostreatus, Suppose they could be oyster mushrooms. But thought oysters didnt have stems, these have stems. Or does it just look like they have stems?

When growing off the side of a tree the stem is absent or lateral.when growing from the top of something they can be central(like the top of a log or a home cultivated oyster block, or in your case up through a crack)

Those are definitely oysters aka pleurotus ostreatus.  They usually do have stems, what makes the stems of oysters different from a lot of other mushrooms is that the gills go down the stem.  I've picke a lot of oysters and I am 100% sure that that is what they are.  Plus Alan Rockefeller said they were oysters and he's a Trusted Identifier so you can believe what he tells you they are.

Oysters are choice edibles by the way.  Lots of people put a lot of work into growing those. Congrats again  they look so cool growing out of the wall like that.

They are definitely 100% Pleurotus ostreatus like Alan said. That's really an easy to ID mushroom.
Pretty funky having it growing in your living room. Your parents might want to check the walls there, though. Maybe they have a leaking pipe or the houses insulation is faulty enabling groundwater to push up into the structure. Normally the floors and walls in a house shouldn't provide good growing conditions for mushrooms, as they aren't really ideal living conditions for humans.

Good advice. If you own the house check it out. The wood might be rotting which is bad). If oysters can grow so can other molds and fungus.

Hey this is kind of off topic but shouldn't it be possible for shroomery to add mushroom names to the spell checker?

Kewl, thanks guys. Oyster mushrooms it is.
Yeah the growing out of the corner is a bit odd and disconcerting. I had the same thought about it not being a good sign of decent living conditions.

Thanks again.

Oh, One more question, any good links to posts or sites that would go into how I can collect these spores and grow some for myself.....outside.

The Shroomery is the one place you need to visit to get all the mushroom cultivation knowledge you would ever dream of. That is however a different section of The Shroomery (cultivation). I will say though, that Oyster mushrooms are renown for their prolific spore production. You should be able to get some huge spore prints off of these specimen unless they are for some reason sterile. Those spore prints will surely allow you to cultivate your own - Oyster mushrooms are pretty much as easy as it gets as far as mushroom cultivation.

Again, cool find!

I'd probably go full-out ghetto throwing pieces on wet cardboard outside and then mixing the colonized shreds into a moist straw log. If it fruits from a crack in the living room floor it's likely going to work. Seems to be good oyster genetics anyways.

Cool pics but that was my first thought too that there is probably some damage to the house and that can cause lots of molds and bad funguses you don't want. Id get that patched up quickly.

Haha, dude, I have seen some unlikely things, but I thought mushrooms growing out of your living room would be too much to ask. Like The Kahuna said though, you prolly got some repair work to do on your wall.

It will take alot to top  this one. I think the only way one could top this is by finding psilocybes growing out of your walls.

Haha that shit is awesome!!!
I was just thinking earlier it'd be crazy if mushrooms just started growing in my room from all the spores I carry in there, and then I see this! Maybe I should put a rotting log in my room...

It's an awesome picture and part of me is going "dude, lucky! perfect looking oysters in your house!!"

then the other half of me remembers it's eating a $500,000 house.
