Who do you think the best bass player of all time is?
I think Les Claypool from Primus is.

I'd probably go for James Jamerson for his lovely melodic style. So smooth...

Victor Wooten is probably the most technically proficient bassist I've seen, he's fucking nuts
My favorite bassist is probably Bootsy though

Claypool or Bootsy, hard to call. Claypool is sick though and then combined with his stage presence seeing him is always a wicked treat.

Les Claypool isn't very versatile. He has a schtick. He's good like Flea is good.
I tend to think that Victor Wooten, or any number of nerdy fusion players (like Steve Baily, for ex.), could easily do everything Claypool does if they cared to.

Yeah, I would have to say Victor Wooten is the best all around bassist of all time. He is extremely proficient in so many styles and techniques. I almost hate watching him because I know I will never be that good.

Probably true, but you also gotta consider the art he has created into his skill

Claypool is quite versatile. I feel what you are saying, but I would not limit Claypool's versatility to just the styles and methods of playing that you normally hear from him. When one rises to the level of fame he has people are going to categorize your form, and in turn, fans expect to hear a certain sound for at least a major portion of any given show. When one is less famous, there is more room to experiment, imo.
In any event, he is definitely a tier or more above Flea.

Yeah, flea's kind of overrated IMO.

sure -- whatever that means.
Frizzle Fry is an amusing and sometimes bizarre album. It's also repetitive and has little in the way of memorable/moving phrasing, melody, harmony...
Claypool thinks up some weird riffs, but seldom much more than that. His ideas are 2 bars long -- 4 tops.

There isnt really a best in music. Its like saying this type of food is the best. Just dont add up. Theres alot of super human bassist and guitarists.
Flea is one of my favorites though. Gotta love the funky bass lines from RHC. Serious fan of Primus here, I have seen Les play so may times, since about 92' but I noticed you showed the same video that was put out by the reader poll of "Rolling Stone Readers Pick the Top Ten Bassists of All Time". BTW that poll is way fucked off.
That is not the best of less but I do have to agree that Victor Wooten is a mad man,
I guess I would have to agree though that less is my favorite bassist when it come to style. Sadly there are not a bunch of great recording of that mad man live

I'll cast a vote for Stanley Clarke.
Here he is back in the 70's doin his thang:
I saw him on the Return to Forever reunion a few years back and I saw him do things on an acoustic stand-up bass that shouldn't really even be possible.
