Who do you think the best bass player of all time is?
I think Les Claypool from Primus is.

I'd probably go for James Jamerson for his lovely melodic style. So smooth...

Victor Wooten is probably the most technically proficient bassist I've seen, he's fucking nuts
My favorite bassist is probably Bootsy though

Claypool or Bootsy, hard to call. Claypool is sick though and then combined with his stage presence seeing him is always a wicked treat.

Les Claypool isn't very versatile. He has a schtick. He's good like Flea is good.
I tend to think that Victor Wooten, or any number of nerdy fusion players (like Steve Baily, for ex.), could easily do everything Claypool does if they cared to.

Yeah, I would have to say Victor Wooten is the best all around bassist of all time. He is extremely proficient in so many styles and techniques. I almost hate watching him because I know I will never be that good.

Claypool is quite versatile. I feel what you are saying, but I would not limit Claypool's versatility to just the styles and methods of playing that you normally hear from him. When one rises to the level of fame he has people are going to categorize your form, and in turn, fans expect to hear a certain sound for at least a major portion of any given show. When one is less famous, there is more room to experiment, imo.
In any event, he is definitely a tier or more above Flea.

sure -- whatever that means.
Frizzle Fry is an amusing and sometimes bizarre album. It's also repetitive and has little in the way of memorable/moving phrasing, melody, harmony...
Claypool thinks up some weird riffs, but seldom much more than that. His ideas are 2 bars long -- 4 tops.

There isnt really a best in music. Its like saying this type of food is the best. Just dont add up. Theres alot of super human bassist and guitarists.
Flea is one of my favorites though. Gotta love the funky bass lines from RHC. Serious fan of Primus here, I have seen Les play so may times, since about 92' but I noticed you showed the same video that was put out by the reader poll of "Rolling Stone Readers Pick the Top Ten Bassists of All Time". BTW that poll is way fucked off.
That is not the best of less but I do have to agree that Victor Wooten is a mad man,
I guess I would have to agree though that less is my favorite bassist when it come to style. Sadly there are not a bunch of great recording of that mad man live

I'll cast a vote for Stanley Clarke.
Here he is back in the 70's doin his thang:
I saw him on the Return to Forever reunion a few years back and I saw him do things on an acoustic stand-up bass that shouldn't really even be possible.

Claypool is no very technical compared to this guy:
See 1:15 on the second video, especially.

Fuck those last two videos. Here's one that should get the "Les Claypool is technical" argument off the table.
Good music? Not IMHO. Victor Wooten butchers the Charlie Parker's melody. But it puts LC's ham-handed slap into perspective.

Mostly feeling I agree.
Even being a big time metal head from the late 80's I don't think cliff Burton is that great. I mean he was a damn good bassist but.... meh. Steve DiGiorgio is fucking awesome, bassist of Sadus, Death, Control Denied, Testament ,Sebastian Bach, and many other bands. The dude can play bass.

How about this. If your pick is Les Claypool or Victor Wooten, refrain from posting it. They have pretty good coverage in this thread already. I'll betcha they would both name Stanley Clarke as their hero.

Oh cool, yeah man, feeling and emotion as you experience it is all that matters, sorry we were being so wrong with our opinions.
Did it occur to you that the technical excellence expressed by these guys in their playing actually provokes feeling and emotion in people who appreciate it? I get so much joy and excitement when I hear a really good bass player playing with a great band.
Further, if all you want is raw feelings thrown against a wall then yeah, technical chops don't matter. Also, who cares about works made by great technical writers or artists, feeelings are all that matters right?
I mean, feelings and emotions could probably be more effectively expressed by someone with a high technical proficiency, but nah, fuck these super technical douche bags.

I'm just tired of hearing "I want feeling and emotion in music, not technical skill", as if the two were mutually exclusive.

I havn't seen the movie, but I think it's screening at a theater near me on 4/20
"a Guild Starfire bass that was later altered by Alembic Instruments. Dubbed the "Godfather," it has three Alembic pickups — a quad pickup with four outputs (one for each string) and standard bass and treble humbuckers. The bottom half of the instrument is crammed full of electronics, while the top half is loaded with foam rubber to damp the resonance of the body to eliminate feedback."
"Phil's bass system alone was two columns of 18 15" speakers, each 36 feet tall...."

The whole fuckin thing. It's just a string of 8 beat measures with the occasional 4 beat segue, count it out(with the exception of the down tempo part near the end where he adds an extra beat to the end of the measure a few times then brings it out of that section with four measures of 7/8). This is why Western music is so fucked.

The only thing dumb here is your comprehension. Where did I say all Western sounds sounds just like that clip? Western music is fucked because it is bereft of a rhythmic tradition beyond pedestrian duple and triple grooves, ie 8/8, 6/8, 12/8 and a few other compound time variations on this form. But I'm not surprised you didn't understand that since you didn't recognize the blatant sarcasm in my post in the fireball thread.

"This is why Western music is so fucked." The video was the subject that you were referring to as "This".
Now I'm explaining 1st grade English to you, awesome. No I didn't recognize sarcasm because it's the internet, and some people are really fucking stupid. Instead of whining about time signatures, try listening to the music, although I agree that that particular video, was fucking horrible.

Wow, well a whole range of shit. I was listening the Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi on vinyl a second ago and some Mahavishnu Orchestra before that. I like a lot of 70's stuff, prog rock, fusion. I also like jazz from that period and the 60's. I was listening to Coltrane's Interstellar Space yesterday, blown away. Talk about freedom. I think in my car stereo right now is a burned cd containing Between the Buried and Me's new EP, TMV's Tremulant EP and Rhinoplasty by Primus. I got into music as a kid in the 90's with classic rock and the shit from the day, like Weezer, Green Day, Live, Pearl Jam, Pumpkins, RATM, you know, 90's shit that every kid listened to. With less exposure to rock early on than average since I was born into a new age doomsday cult. I'm fed up as hell with 99% of "new" music, just the same stale rhythms and forms over and over. The Mars Volta is my modern pop hero.

Since we're at it, could someone please explain the appeal of Cliff Burton to me? The only song of his that I can remember is "Pulling Teeth (Anaesthesia)," which I find more than a little silly (whoa, dude, ARPEGGIOS?!?).
Mingus is great, but I've never thought of his an an excellent bass player. Composer, band leader, cultural icon, perhaps even intellectual -- yes, but bass virtuoso not so much.

That's how I feel.
Am I missing anything.

Well, I'm a product of my heritage and environment like anyone else. I love Indian Classical and that music has an incredible rhythmic tradition. I've been listening to Eastern European folk stuff on youtube recently, amazing rhythmic stuff going on there. Western music needs to expand its rhythmic tradition if it's going to go anywhere. I try to do my part with the music I make but an overwhelming current moves in a different direction of sameness and complete heedlessness as it concerns rhythmic form.

my contribution to this thread:
Definitely all the bass players mentioned already. In particular pastorius. Charles Mingus was mentioned too. Definitely agree with that. I think many people recognize his level of musicianship and many dont even have a clue. Pithecanthropus Erectus is one of my favorite albums of his. His solo on Foggy Day is fulminating with melodic lyricism. Title track is bad ass for programmatic jazz.
Additionally I wanted to mention Eddie Gomez. Definitely more of a straight ahead jazz bassist but he is well versed in latin and funk rhythms. I love his work with Steps Ahead. His work with steps (Maineri, Brecker, Steve Gadd, and Don Grolnick) is equally as impressive. Don Grolnicks composition Pools is must for Jazz bassists. I feel Pools is a very progressive composition, exploring variation in instrumentation (sax and bazz play melody) and furthering the concept of economy that is so well known to critics from a variety of miles davis works. The piece has a eery yet funky, spacey ambiance. Gomez's prior work with the Bill Evans trio is simply beautiful.
More to mention, richard bona has some great chops, he sits in for a lot of bassists. His solo stuff, pat metheny stuff, pastorius big band, and mike stern stuff are my favorites. A great fusion bassist with definitive aesthetic.
Christian Mcbride is bad ass bassist too. He's played with so many giants in the industry. I like his lead performance on the Live at Tonic album particularly.
For pure funk bass Marcus Miller can lay it down. His album titled Marcus is oozin with with funk.
Damn so many great bassists out there. Bob cranshaw is a favorite too. He plays a mean electric bass. John patittuci is pretty solid as well. I especially like his performance on wayne shorter's beyond the sound barrier. That whole album is brilliant. Its feel is very free and improvised but the most spontaneous and articulate musical structures will form transiently between the musicians' improv. I like all the weather report bass player. Alphonso johnson is great fusion/funk/and rock player, as is victor bailey. Whos victor wooten btw? Im sure Im missing a bunch of people ill probably think of later.
Steve swallow and ray brown are fantastic bassists I need to do some more research on.

Ahhh I see, I agree than, the rhythms are often bland and you have to occasionally look rather hard to find western music with interesting rhythms... but I don't really tend to any other cultures music particularly - the melodic and rhythmic structure of indian music is amazing but I like complex harmonies as well
Between the Buried and Me satisfies all

Bill Evans always had great bass players and gave them room to shine. Eddie Gomez is great; Scott LaFaro also deserves mention in this thread.
I had never thought of Mingus as a very emotional player, but perhaps you're right. Any reason to go back and listen more is a good one.
One more for the mix: Chuck Rainey. I love his line in "Kid Charlemagne" -- so locked in to the groove, carrying all of the chord changes without being slave to them.
Oh yeah, and has anyone mentioned Les Claypool?

Is anyone here familiar with a jazz (acoustic upright) player named Sean Smith? He has a great duos album with the pianist Bill Charlap. Smith wrote most of the tunes, to which both he and Charlap bring a wealth of ideas.

Now we're outside of the realm of bass players and I'm still exploring the European stuff but I have found Turkish and Bulgarian folk to be consistently unique and vital rhythmically and musically. I know Secret Chiefs 3 led by Trey Spruance assimilates these musics into what they're composing. Shades of it can also be heard in Robert Fripp's playing.
As for the Indian, Shakti is a good connecting point since it features Zakir Hussein who is a premier tabla player and John McLaughlin, I'm sure you know who that is. A fusion of jazz modality and Indian classical. You won't find any bass players since most classical and carnatic Indian is essentially monophonic so no need to hold down the root or lead harmonically. But as far as having a rhythmic tradition, no culture has really gone further.

Good call! Even Steely Dan bass players in general. Haitian Divorce(also Chuck Rainey on The Royal Scam) is a personal bass favorite of mine. But yeah, between his work on Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho I think Chuck shines the brightest of all The Dan's bass players.
