Oh cool, yeah man, feeling and emotion as you experience it is all that matters, sorry we were being so wrong with our opinions.
Did it occur to you that the technical excellence expressed by these guys in their playing actually provokes feeling and emotion in people who appreciate it? I get so much joy and excitement when I hear a really good bass player playing with a great band.
Further, if all you want is raw feelings thrown against a wall then yeah, technical chops don't matter. Also, who cares about works made by great technical writers or artists, feeelings are all that matters right?
I mean, feelings and emotions could probably be more effectively expressed by someone with a high technical proficiency, but nah, fuck these super technical douche bags.
Why read a great book when I can just listen to a retard yelling in the street, it's just so full of feeling and emotion!
yes yes sorry for posting my personal opinion i wont do that anymore

I'm just tired of hearing "I want feeling and emotion in music, not technical skill", as if the two were mutually exclusive.

Let's hear them play something with a unique rhythmic scheme, that would be impressive, instead of just a bunch of radically different 8 beat measures.

I havn't seen the movie, but I think it's screening at a theater near me on 4/20
"a Guild Starfire bass that was later altered by Alembic Instruments. Dubbed the "Godfather," it has three Alembic pickups — a quad pickup with four outputs (one for each string) and standard bass and treble humbuckers. The bottom half of the instrument is crammed full of electronics, while the top half is loaded with foam rubber to damp the resonance of the body to eliminate feedback."
"Phil's bass system alone was two columns of 18 15" speakers, each 36 feet tall...."

The whole fuckin thing. It's just a string of 8 beat measures with the occasional 4 beat segue, count it out(with the exception of the down tempo part near the end where he adds an extra beat to the end of the measure a few times then brings it out of that section with four measures of 7/8). This is why Western music is so fucked.

The only thing dumb here is your comprehension. Where did I say all Western sounds sounds just like that clip? Western music is fucked because it is bereft of a rhythmic tradition beyond pedestrian duple and triple grooves, ie 8/8, 6/8, 12/8 and a few other compound time variations on this form. But I'm not surprised you didn't understand that since you didn't recognize the blatant sarcasm in my post in the fireball thread.

"This is why Western music is so fucked." The video was the subject that you were referring to as "This".
Now I'm explaining 1st grade English to you, awesome. No I didn't recognize sarcasm because it's the internet, and some people are really fucking stupid. Instead of whining about time signatures, try listening to the music, although I agree that that particular video, was fucking horrible.

Wow, well a whole range of shit. I was listening the Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi on vinyl a second ago and some Mahavishnu Orchestra before that. I like a lot of 70's stuff, prog rock, fusion. I also like jazz from that period and the 60's. I was listening to Coltrane's Interstellar Space yesterday, blown away. Talk about freedom. I think in my car stereo right now is a burned cd containing Between the Buried and Me's new EP, TMV's Tremulant EP and Rhinoplasty by Primus. I got into music as a kid in the 90's with classic rock and the shit from the day, like Weezer, Green Day, Live, Pearl Jam, Pumpkins, RATM, you know, 90's shit that every kid listened to. With less exposure to rock early on than average since I was born into a new age doomsday cult. I'm fed up as hell with 99% of "new" music, just the same stale rhythms and forms over and over. The Mars Volta is my modern pop hero.

Since we're at it, could someone please explain the appeal of Cliff Burton to me? The only song of his that I can remember is "Pulling Teeth (Anaesthesia)," which I find more than a little silly (whoa, dude, ARPEGGIOS?!?).
Mingus is great, but I've never thought of his an an excellent bass player. Composer, band leader, cultural icon, perhaps even intellectual -- yes, but bass virtuoso not so much.
