i just got my 23 quart presto pc today and im gonna be doing spawn bags within a week or so... i have a few half pint jars laying around and i want to test my lc on one of them using wbs. i know tyvek is free at the post office and cheap at stores but while im sitting home right now, i wanted to see if theres a way that i can do a jar or 2 without using tyvek or polyfill. is this possible? i do have micropore tape but a lot of people on here say that it sucks

so i just went to a few stores and none of them had tyvek coveralls in stock.. i ended up getting polypropylene shoe covers to see if they might work for my test jars. is it possible that these might work in combination with micropore tape?

Polyfil would have been cheaper, but that stuff might well work.

Last time I did PF tek style jars (15 years ago) I used nothing but foil to cover the lids with the holes in em. Not a single contam. I don't see why micropore tape wouldn't work just fine. The dry verm is there as a barrier. Some sort of breathable barrier would probably be better than just foil covered holes (such as micropore tape), but it'll work without it. Just go for it and don't worry it to death, it'll work. Well, as good as a couple jars will work that is, won't get much from it. If you contam it won't be because of whatever is covering the holes. Contams usually enter during inoculation.
EDIT: LOL nevermind, I read LC as PF... Forget my advice hehe

I would give you one piece of advice. If this is the first time you have used a PC, try a trial run with just water. My first time with the AA21 it failed because I seated it improperly or it needed to be broken in. Hate to see you get it all set up and have a PC screw up.

I use micropore tape on some jars No problems. All my brf jars are done like that.

update****
the jars worked successfully, so did my first LC. the way i did the jars was jar, lid, polypropylene shoe cover, band, 2 coffee filters, then foil. pc'd them for 90 mins and let them cool. after they cooled i knocked them up 1 by 1 by unscrewing the band to remove polypropylene(making sure the lid stayed on tight), screwing the band back on, injecting into 4 small holes that i created before pc'ing, then quickly covering each hole with 2 pieces of micropore tape. then covered the top with a fresh piece of foil. some people im sure will say its ok to inject thru the polypropylene, and that its dangerous to unscrew the band. personally i had no problems, all 4 jars colonized 100% within 10 days (2 MS jars and 2 LC jars).

pint or quart jars work better for LC, no problems with liquids touching the filters when stirring...but good idea testing before going all out with your PC. if you did jars and failed, nothing wrong with PCing twice if you use foil on the jars...theyre there to keep the moisture content proper any way.
