Orange worms on shrooms in monotub? WTF!?
    #14271980 - 04/11/11 12:08 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

First of all, I want to say hello to everybody as this is my first post. I am a regular reader of the site and this kid i heard of has a few grows under his belt.

Currently he's working on a monotub, and it when he harvested the crop, theres these little orange worms crawling over the fruit. They are definitely alive, as he's seen them inch across his fingernail just like an inchworm. I have attached a picture. I'd say theyre a millimeter long and hes killed maybe 20 of them with a knife so far. They are hard to see so he can't kill them all like this (only when he inspects a harvested fruit can he notice)

... I have searched and cannot find anything regarding these things. I suspect it's causing his small fruits/very low yield as 6500k 80w light is above it, 4.5" of sub, humidity is high as possible, and theres  a ton of FAE (although it was a MS from rye and its on first flush)... thoughts?

WTF is this. Its freaking him out. He suspects the pasteurization went badly as he did this tek (it calls for boiling water poured over the poo mix, he unfortunately just read RR saying not to do this)

http://www.rollitup.org/hallucinatory-substances/395504-bulk-mono-tek-pictorial.html

Substrate: horse poo/verm/coir/ gypsum (no casing)

So please, someone who knows what they're talking about please help addressing these questions:

-Wtf is this?

-Is it dangerous to him or the mycelium/fruit? How dangerous?

- How does he get rid of them?

Thanks in advance, and I hope to contribute help to other people on this site in the near future if I can.

The little orange thing at the bottom of the cap..

Sound to me like maybe you have some kind of infestation. If I were you I probably wouldn't eat them, there's no telling what kind of parasite or insect it is, or the bacteria it is carrying. Maybe he failed to pasteurize properly, I just don't see how you could have a bunch come out of nowhere unless you were impossibly unsterile. I hope someone else has some input on this situation, I would be so pissed if I saw this on my fruits. If you have anything else in the room fruiting, I would remove it immediately.

Yea man, its really bothering him as almost all his harvest has them on it...definitely an infestation..he just doesnt want to see this thing go to waste as it took so long to get to this stage.. and yea thats the only grow in the room.

He was pretty damn good at keeping clean too, my thought is that it was in the horse shit and somehow survived the pasteurization..

Does anyone else know anything about this? Could they be nematodes?

Thanks for the help!

I would hope that nothing of that nature survived your pasteurization, you may want to refine your future pasteurizing techniques. I know I had a similar problem with some of my Cannabis plants, I used a non-poison worm/catepillar control spray called Bacillus thuringiensis. I couldn't tell you if its approved for use in mycology. I would think if those little worms are in you substrate, that they are probably in the mushrooms to an extent as well. I would be more worried about my personal health, its not worth getting hurt over. Sometimes you have to take your losses, but then again IDK for sure.

yea well he used the boiling water in a bucket technique as described in that tek..he's ditching that for next time. it worries me that I havent seen this problem at all on this site... its like he has a freak infestation of worms...real creepy.. thanks for the help though.

Hopefully RR or some other long time cultivator could help me out?

The pillow case method is better IMO, look it up.

according to this thing none of the larvae are orange...

I dunno though hopefully you're right and he sees flies soon because hed rather know what hes up against than be worried about some parasite that could kill him

since the worms are easy to see pick them off the mushrooms and substrate where possible.  They will either die when you dry the mushrooms or migrate elsewhere.  the mushrooms will be safe to eat.

they are most likely larvae of some fly/gnat etc.

try and keep your grows more protected from flies.  cover the FAE holes with filters etc.

Lol you going to eat those and have a bad trip worrying about those nasty fucking worms. Maybe a little lemon juice will clear things up.

Thanks solumvita hopefully youre right

As for eating them and being paranoid... i think tea boiled and filtered through double coffee filters will definitely catch them if theyre still alive.. I think he said theyre dead now that theyre dried though..

Do you think these things are fucking up the substrate?

I wouldn't worry about those worms hurting you at all if you decide to eat them. The FDA allows lots of bug parts to be in your food , just a lil extra protein.

Ok so i figured I'd give an update for people who might have this problem in the future:

He looked at the walls and the lid of the monotub and found these tiny winged insects just chillin on the moisture droplets. When he swiped them with toilet paper to kill them, they stained orange on the paper. This leads me to conclude that Anonjon and Solumvita were right, they are some sort of gnat that has just started to mature out of its orange- worm-looking larval stage. When the fruits dry, they seem to die as well. All is well (I hope). Cheers.

FOAF has the same thing, they are these little white colored larvae, and as they mature they turn orange. FOAF has not seen them in their adult-fly stage yet.

Fucking nasty, FOAF has no idea how this started, he pasteurized pillowcase method, internal temp of sub was atleast 140 for over an hour, I dont think these could have survived.

Something must have flew into the monotub?
