Heating Pad or Water Heater?
    #1427147 - 04/03/03 08:03 PM (21 years, 18 days ago)

Cant make a desicion... water heater / heat mat?

What are the pros/cons of both ways to keep my turtle's jars warm whilst they cultivate? At the moment they are at 20 degree Celcius cause winter just hit.

Cheers

I like heating pads... I've never had a problem with them. if you keep it on low and monitor it, it's a pretty good thing. it raises the temp in my room too, so I only have to keep it on for a little while, and my room's temp will raise to 78-80 and the towels in the incubator store the heat so you don't need to use it that much.

water heater, you don't have to check on it all the time, just get it set at the right setting then you can forget about it and can be sure that it is staying at a steady tempature. go get a small fish tank water heater, there not very much money and totaly worth it.

wouldnt having the jars sit in stagnant water all the time increase green mold possibilities?

Do a tub in tub with a water heater. Seems to work.

my boss at work uses a heating pad, he likes it  the only thing that bothers him is the fact that it may burn down his house, yay!

He would get a water heater but for right now the heating pad is doing it's job just fine

2 Rubbermaids and a fully submersible aquarium heater!
The bottom Rubbermaid has the water and the heater in it.
The top Rubbermaid has the jars in it.
The jars don't sit in the water.

This is the best and safest way!

Magash has the right Idea, I keep all of my jars in a very similar incubator with water in the bottom tub with the heater and keep them at around 90 F, They colonize very quickly at that temp

So that 2 rubbermaid setup is set-and-forget? What if the temperature of the room fluctuates a lot?

My friend has one submersable water heater and he got it at wally world it was cheap and it flucuated with the temp of his room. Then he bought 2 nice ones from a pet store and they do not change temps when his rooms changes temps. So pay the extra money on a nice one and if it has a knob you turn to set it to an exact temp and it reads it on like the side of it is the best in his opinion.
