From what I understood, you can change the locks INSIDE the unit, eg. bathroom etc.
Just not outside.
There was never a lock on the closet. I added it. I am allowed in the lease to make any alterations AS LONG AS they are put back to normal at the end. This means I can paint, etc. As long as I fix it in the end. But I cannot tear up the floor because that is not recoverable.

*sigh*

I'll try again.

It doesn't matter if you add/change a lock. It doesn't matter if you don't want your landlord to enter/open your closet. The landlord has the legal right (with 24 hour notice) to open/enter every room, basement, attic or closet in a rental unit.

I know I'm not telling you what you wish to hear, nor does it conform to your preconceived notions. It is what it is though.

Learn from your mistake. Remove anything you don't want the landlord to see before giving notice in the future.

And as for your landlord allowing alterations... count your blessings. I'm a member of a couple landlord organizations, and I know of zero landlords that will allow this.

Thanks for that info luvdemshrooms. There's a lot there I didn't know

@ anon#1
You are modifying your landlord's property. Something you should never do. Just on general principal, you need to move anything directly/indirectly related from your grow area. You can never grow there again. You can never store stuff there again. Get a luggage case with a lock, and store it at a friends. Just say you need a place to store your shit while you plan on moving.

and you need a dildo for your closet. A big veiny triumphant bastard, standing front and center. And veggie oil. That combo could explain the water damage =P

What a shitty thing that a landlord can show up whenever.  In Ohio they have to provide at least 24 hours notice.  In my last apartment I had an entire bedroom locked off and it didn't matter when they saw it.

well, if he's your landlord wouldn't he have the key to the closet?  he sounds like a prick though, definitely get rid of everything just in case.

No I live in an apartment.
So the closet I can have any lock on it I want.
Its an inside closet in my unit.

As a landlord I can tell you, you're wrong.

I can inspect every nook, cranny and closet of an apartment. What I can't do is look in stuff (like furniture) that you personally own. I can't open your dresser drawers. I can't look inside any free standing cabinets that belong to you. I can't open your toolbox or cardboard boxes.

I can open built ins, such as kitchen or bathroom cabinets. I can look in your refrigerator (assuming I own it). I can go into the basement or attic. And yes, I can look into any closet I wish to.

Here's some advice from a generic landlords perspective. Do not be surprised, if after I notice a new lock has been added to a door, that you have peaked my curiosity. Don't hang drug posters or pictures around your rental unit. Don't leave your bong or bowl out where I can see it if the tenant in an adjacent apartment reports a water or gas leak. A landlord (or a landlords representative) can enter your apartment at any time, night or day, if a serious problem has been reported. Don't leave mirrors and razor blades out in sight. If I have given the required 24 hours notice, I will enter your apartment. I will remove any lock I find that limits my access to a room or closet. Always keep your shit and paraphernalia out of sight.

Your apartment, is not "yours". It is mine.

Now... as I like to consume illegal substances, I don't give a crap whether you party or not. I never enter an apartment without the proper notice, unless an emergency situation arises. I personally don't care about small pot or shroom grows (just don't overload my circuits). Don't even think about dealing from my building though. I am a business man. I don't need the cops pegging my building as a problem building.

Where you fucked up was:
1. Believing your closet is "safe".
2. Giving notice before removing anything that could cause you trouble.

Sure, but just because you can look everywhere in the place doesn't mean you can do it with no notice.

I don't know what the law is where this guy's from, but a usual system is 24 hours notice except emergencies.  I would bet the landlord doesn't have the right to break the lock and look in unless its an emergency, and it doesn't sound like there was one.

Even with the exception for showing the place to prospective tenants, the law likely just makes that an exception to the general rule and doesn't neccesarily allow him to use his access to the apartment for uses inconsistant with the exempted actions.

Of course I don't know what the law is there and there's not much you can do if the landlord does break the law unless you have some actual damages, which is doubtful in this case.

Clearly, you didn't read my post very well.

Had you, you might have noticed this in the post you quoted:
Quote:

If I have given the required 24 hours notice

Or this, from the same post:
Quote:

A landlord (or a landlords representative) can enter your apartment at any time, night or day, if a serious problem has been reported.

I suppose I could have used the word "emergency" as opposed to "serious". However, I occasionally assume people are clever enough to understand.

Or from a later post:
Quote:

I'll leave my shit out all over my house. If my landlord wants to come up in here being nosey i have a whole list of shit he can fix while he's here, and he knows it. He just comes over to mow the lawn, and leaves.:mushroom2::lol:
For 650 a month he better be kissing my ass.:rolleyes:no insulation having mofo..

But of course if you put in notice, naturally he wants to get it rented, and will be showing it, so....yeah.
Good luck.

It's all just good advice. Do as you wish, just don't whine about it later.

I live in an apartment, and my mushroom grow is locked in a closet, the door always locked.

Long story short I gave my two months notice to move out, and because of how the tenants and landlords act works, the landlord can show off my place any time between 8AM and 8PM.

However the closet was always locked, and when the landlord came by I always just said my girl had the key and she wasn't home.

So I was tripping on the weekend, a few tabs of acid. It was an AMAZING day and I was taking a long walk and happened to walk past the landlord and his family. He says out of the blue "So when are you going to share whats in your closet"?
I am like umm wtf? Tripping balls and not sure what to expect. He then is like "Oh you got to share bro, you got to share. I'll come by sometime".

Now there is no way in hell he could know exactly what was inside since it was always locked, but maybe he suspects. Probably thinks I was growing weed.
I went back and while tripping removed everything, got rid of all evidence, and stored the dried product at another location. Put random shit inside my closet, only issue is a little water damage at the top.

Hope nothing comes of it, eg. he gets pissed off when he comes up and sees nothing / I have nothing to share and like a jackass calls the cops.
The only stuff I have in my place is K and L but I guess I should clean that out too.

Really :feelsbadman:

Only till the end of April thank god. Then I am gone.

If he asks you when he could come, then its not a fucking raid. And obviously he DOES NOT expect to find anything, because HE HAS WARNED YOU.

I do not know the laws in your area, but if you "accidentally" find that there is something missing in your room, like a stereo, computer, etc, blame the landlord. He has the key and access and in my country, landlord will be charged guilty.
