can somebody explain me that?

hi folks.... i was bored so i tried to make some pf jars and sterilize them. I let them sit in the pot with the lid with still alluminium foil for more than a month...
last week i checked them three and i see only one was still "safe" the other two were almost entirely green. Today i check them again and the one highlander became green too.
I can't explain this. After 90'+ boiling shouldn't they be completely sterile? why one of them one week ago was still clean and now a mess? jars are covered with lids, tyvek and aluminium foil. They hadn't been inoculated...

Not quite sterile. Now you know why we use pressure cookers.

None of it was sterile once the water cooled down and contaminant spores entered the vessel. With saturation humidity like that, it's no wonder mold spores found their way in. RR

now you know why you shouldn't sterilize too much in advance. Wait until you are ready to inoculate before sterilizing your substrate

so if i understood... high umidity range can bring mold spores also through alluminium, lid and tyvek???
in fact a friend of mine usually put his jars to incubate in a tub with water and an acquarium heater, jars' bottom touching water surface. he has always a contam rating really, really high...

you can't sterilize something 100%, even by pressure cooking. The basic idea is you kill enough of the contaminant/stunt it so hard, that the mushroom has a chance to outgrow it, and colonize all the food-source. A pf cake, uninnoculated, will eventually start growing contamination, even if it's 100% sealed

You let them sit in a pot of water for a month... What did you expect to happen? Standing water is a breeding ground for all things bad... Even leaving jars in an unopened pressure cooker for that long will likely contam..

yeah but there's no way for water to penetrate foil and tyvek over all

does'nt matter. as was said, it was never COMPLETELY sterile. those few contams left will eventually recover and germinate. try again.

Jebus just doesn't want you to grow mushrooms.
