- 1966: Stephen Kessler murders his mother in law, after having supposedly taken LSD
Quote:
Stephen H. Kessler is a person who was known as the "LSD Killer".
Education
He attended Harvard College and graduated class of '57, and was enrolled in Downstate Medical School in 1964, but was asked to leave because of his unstable behaviour.
Trial
He was arrested in April 1967 and tried for murder in October, having apparently stabbed his mother-in-law 105 times. Headlines trumpeted him as a "Mad LSD Slayer" and "LSD Killer", based on a statement made during his arrest that he had been "flying for three days on LSD". His LSD usage, a month prior, was not mentioned during the trial proceedings. His drug use was revealed as having been "one-and-a-half grains of phenobarbital" and "three quarts of lab alcohol".
Psychiatrists testified that he actually suffered from chronic paranoid schizophrenia and he was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
He was later committed to Bellevue Hospital for mental tests.

(New York AP and many subsequent newspaper articles report the date of the murder as April 11, 1966)
- 1966: Sandoz Pharmaceuticals halts distribution of LSD in the US
Quote:
Apr 1966 Sandoz Pharmaceutical recalled the LSD it had previously distributed and withdrew its sponsorship for work with LSD.

LSD Distribution Ceased After Hallucinogen Furor
Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, the nation's only licensed distributor of the controversial drug, LSD, has ceased distribution of the hallucinatory drug in this country, it was learned Wednesday.
LSD, technically known as lysergic acid diethylamide, is produced by the company's parent concern, Sandoz Limited, in Switzerland
The Daily Advance of Dover, in a copyrighted story for its Thursday edition said distribution was halted Monday [April 11th 1966].

- 1974: Aloysius Juodakis' mescaline lab is busted
Quote:
Raid On Warehouse Produces Mescaline
One of the largest illicit mescaline laboratories in the nation was uncovered in an East San Rafael warehouse Thursday [April 11, 1974] by a team of federal narcotics agents. San Rafael police reported today. San Rafael Police Detective Roy G. Hendricks. who accompanied 13 federal drug agents in the 8 p.m. raid at 26 Medway Road, unit 12, said the clandestine lab was capable of producing about $180,000 worth of the drug each week. Mescaline is an hallucinogen similar to LSD. Hendricks said the raiders surprised Aloysius G. Juodakis. 36, as he mixed chemicals at the laboratory. Juodakis apparently resided "around the county." according to the detective, living at times in the lab and at a residence on Northern Avenue in Tamalpais Valley. Juodakis, booked into Mann County jail on suspicion of manufacturing the drug, was turned over to federal authorities in San Francisco. U.S. Magistrate Owen W. Woodruff set bail at $10,000. Hendricks said the Medway Road warehouse had been under surveillance for three weeks, after federal narcotics agents traced shipments of chemicals used in manufacture of the drug to the address. Juodakis offered no resistance as raiders burst into the warehouse. He just stood there extremely shocked. .. not saying a word," according to the San Rafael detective. Several hundred pounds of chemicals, test tubes, cauldrons, heating units and other equipment were seized. Hendricks said. Much of the chemical substances seized were chemicals used to manufacture mescaline, but a small quantity of the refined drug also was found, he said. "Federal agents said it was probably the biggest mescaline lab in the country," according to the officer. It was the first large scale mescaline laboratory ever discovered in the state, he added. Hendricks said the lab was similar in many ways to a huge "speed" laboratory discovered in another East San Rafael warehouse last September. That laboratory, capable of producing 200 pounds of methamphetamine weekly, was located less than half mile from the mescaline lab busted Thursday.

A past like this didn't help with the whole drug craze. This is something people will probably use if LSD and other drug laws are ever going to be rewritten.

This is a story that already has been used against LSD. Remember, this particular incident happened almost exactly 6 months before LSD was made illegal. Stories like the Kessler situation, even though it turned out that he hadn't taken LSD that day, were used to scare mainstream America into supporting what would become the drug war.

Well yeah, I understand that. I just have a feeling that if we ever get to the point of rewriting the LSD laws then some crackjob will be like "What about this guy who killed people on LSD?!" and bring up this story. Just all around not cool man.

I suppose so. But they won't point to this incident specifically. There have been a lot of murders by people on psychedelic freak outs since then. This particular incident is just noteworthy because it was one of the first such stories that I'm aware of which was fairly high profile during the early days when the public was still trying to figure out what they were supposed to think of this stuff.

"Flying", that verb had to be specifically chosen to help insinuate that LSD causes you to "think" you can fly...therefore, you jump off of roof of tall tall buildings...pssh!!

While the press was definitely using the Kessler case to demonize LSD, I don't think the use of the word "flying" is a point of concern. Flying was a term that some LSD users used to describe the experience. And as of April of 1966, I don't know of any deaths attributed to jumping from a building while on LSD. As far as I'm currently aware, Vernon Cox, on July 31, 1966 was the first. So at this point, there were no negative implications of that term, as far as I can see.
It is a damn shame how this murder was used by the press as an excuse to slander LSD and expedite it's illegality, but the press (and the government) might not have been the only ones using the Kessler slaying to their advantage. Jay Stevens, author of Storming Heaven: LSD and The American Dream, theorized that Stephen Kessler himself may have also used the public's fear of LSD in a calculated move to excuse his savage murder of Florence Cooper. I think his reasoning is sound. Read the last line in bold:
Quote:
It was a curious thing, but if you changed a few nouns in any of the anti-marijuana stories of the Thirties, you ended up with a reasonable facsimile of the standard "LSD madness" story as it began appearing in the spring of 1966. Not that there weren't legitimate examples of LSD-inspired violence. The most famous, occurring in late April, involved a New Yorker named Stephen Kessler who stabbed his mother-in-law dozens of times with a kitchen knife. When the police came to arrest him, Kessler reportedly said, "Man, I've been flying for three days on LSD. Did I kill my wife? Did I rape anybody? What have I done?" A Harvard graduate (class of '57) and a medical school dropout, Stephen Kessler had a history of psychiatric problems; a few weeks before the murder he had checked himself into Bellevue for treatment, and while he was there his wife had moved back with her parents in Brooklyn. Apparently it was this separation, exacerbated by the LSD, that precipitated the murder. Although the press characterized the Kessler case as an "LSD KILLING," most of the experts were less assured. Two things bothered them. One was the infrequency of rage as an LSD reaction; Time quoted Sidney Cohen to the effect that suicide was much more likely than murder. But more troublesome was Kessler's claim that he had been "flying" for three days and could remember nothing of what had happened. Unless one kept taking LSD, constantly upping the dosage to offset body tolerance, the effects wore off after twelve hours. And the whole uniqueness of the experience was the fact that one remained relatively clearheaded throughout; it was not an alcoholic fog or stupor. So the Kessler case was a toss-up. In terms of his psychiatric profile, Stephen Kessler was a perfect candidate for a psychotic episode had he taken LSD. But given his educational background, he was also astute enough to realize that LSD, in the spring of 1966, was the perfect alibi for what might have been nothing more than a common act of rage and revenge.

But anyway, it's the 45th anniversary of Aloysius Juodakis' mescaline lab getting busted. You don't hear of a synthetic mescaline lab too often.

Wow, really? You met Aloysius Juodakis/Joudakis Aloysius? Did you know of his mescaline synthesizing past? What was he like?
Are you sure his name is Joudakis Aloysius? Besides the fact that all of the newspapers reported his name as being Aloysius Juodakis, I see that there's a court case from 1986, which is Juodakis v. Wolfrum (1986), where they refer to him as Aloysius Juodakis. Also, if you google each name, Aloysius is a common first name and Juodakis seems to be a last name.
