Newbie growing T bridgesii, could use tips * 1
    #14264054 - 04/09/11 07:07 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello

I got 10 T. bridgesii seeds from someone here on shroomery for free a while back. I told myself then i was going to wait until spring-ish to plant them because i didn't want to worry about a fresh sprout going into dormancy stage during the winter. I know very little about cactii.

I've heard T bridgesii are pretty resistant. I've read as much as i could. I think i'll learn how to grow them in time.

But i could use a couple of tips on how to germinate, and subsequently plant the seeds. I believe i read a tek that implied using those clear-lid oval takeout containers with peat and something else. I can't remember.

If anyone could give me some basic tips on growing them, and especially germinating them and subsequent planting. I would be much obliged.

Keep in mind though, i don't have much of a budget (if one at all), and i want to do this on the cheap. Hopefully i'll be able to get 1-2 out of these 10 seeds that survive. Bonus shrooms to people who can recommend soil or nutrients that can be scavanged from the earth, instead of bought at the store

Thanks
-saxx

P.S, i live in oregon and in the country. I have access to people that have access to farm animals if that means anything

You could use sand, or sandy soil from a yard. That works OK. Cook it in an oven to pasteurize it so the seeds do not mold. Keep them humid and covered till they sprout. They sprout best when fresh/new. If you can find a powdered fungicide for seeds, that will help - but it is not absolutely necessary.

They can mold, so non-nutritive soil works best untill they sprout, then use Miracae Grow for nutrients for the first few months. Then they can be planted in better soil. Keep them out of direct sun for the first few months, until they are a few inches tall.

I used to have hundreds, so many that my parents gave them away as gifts to anybody just to get rid of them. I have so many cutting that fall off on their own that I cannot get rid of them all.

- Lowe's, and probably most places, have a cacti and succulent soil mix that may work, but even clay dirt mixed with playground sand pasteurized in an oven will work.

Hope that helps.

If not, see my trade list.

It's past that point now, but you didn't have to worry about seedlings going dormant if you are growing them indoors.  You do not need to induce dormancy for seedlings, and they would not go dormant so long as you kept the temps up.  I actually find it useful to start them in fall or winter when you can't grow things outdoors. By spring they will usually have some size on them so you can give them some outside time if you choose.
