Hi, it would be great if someone could help me out here. Im doing a project for my horticulture class and collecting native mushrooms for identification..and also for a learning experience. Now ive dabbled in mushrooms before but never seriously attempted to id them myself and i realized that i suck lol.please help a newb out
Habitat: these were found growing on a tree stump in a cluster. Tree stump was near a high wall covered with vines.location is southern california on april 3rd. Temps have been in the 75 to 87 this past week but that wall was blocking direct sunlight.

Gills: gills are close, cinnamon sort of color and i beleive not attached but i am a noob.

Stem: largest one was about 4'' long and has vein like wrinkles down the sides, light brownish/cinnamon color, smooth and dry looking, and solid with a thick feel
Cap: largest had a diameter of about 4'' with a knobbed cap. smooth dry texture with light brown on the outside edges and darker towards the center knobb.

Spore print color: cinnamon?light brown?

Bruising: no noticeable bruising
Other information: has that classic mushroomy smell.doesnt smell bad.

Looks like Pluteus sp. to me, could be Pluteus cervinus. Good ID request though!

thanks for the much needed help! i leaning towards cervinus, but it looks so different in my field guide. This needs lots of experience due to the many variables of growing mediums and nutrients and weather combinations that can change the look of a mushroom. wow man. thanks lol.

Yeah, your specimen is fairly old and looks like it was a little water deprived when you picked it.

alright i have another for you guys.
habitat: it was growing in a freshly manured field for plants. the field was manured and woodchips were places on top. the manure was for the plants(landscaping). this was in southern CA on april 9th. temps have been in the 60-75 degrees F here. It has rained lightly the last 2 days. mushrooms seemed dry when picked. and some were barely poking their caps through the wood chips and were kinda buried.
Gills: one specimen had greyish white gills and the rest i found had brown blackish gills..the gills seem to be attached.gills are close but have a noticeable space between every 2 sets.
Stem: longest stem of the bunch was 2 1/2 inches, hollow, thin and fragile with straight lines running up and down it. the color is white and the stem is smooth.
Cap: cap on the largest is about an inch. cap when picked fresh had a fibrous look with a grayish color. I would say caps are more conical than ovate. the caps have a pore in the center.
Spore print color: oddly it was very difficult to get a spore print..maybe due to dryness.best i got was a small blackish tint, but the spore print is deemed unreliable.
Bruising: no noticeable bruising
Other information: My best guess is that its a Panaeolus Semiovatus aka semi-ovate panaeolus
smell isnt too different that the classic mushroomy smell.
 what do you guys think?

You appear to have some type of Coprinellus sp. but I can't really specify on species, it's fairly old and dried out (again.. lol)
Actually, as I stare at these pics, I wonder how long they sat there before you took a picture? They could be Psathyrella sp. as well I suppose, since most Coprinellus sp. tend to deliquesce rather quickly.

Did the caps have any universal veil fragments when fresh?
Maybe Coprinellus flocculosus.

yeah i waited about an hour before taking a pic..had to walk back home..i shall take one right away next time(before picking& after) but people were looking at me weird when i was digging thru manure lol. yeah, they shriveled up real fast. thanks again for the shove in the right direction and dealing with my "noviceness" thanks bro.

Hmm.. I suppose they could still be Coprinellus sp. - seems the best bet to me. But hey, I am learning still myself! Keep up the ID requests man!

Have they slowly begun to turn into black, shriveled up shrooms?

Maybe Coprinellus flocculosus.
not that i noticed.i thought one had one but just turned out to be debri. i would say no veil, but i wouldnt be surprised if i was wrong. Some where buried and just had the very tip of the caps poking out. Maybe i brushed it off somehow digging them out and brushing off dirt??
ill look through those species and try and figure it out.thankks

Coprinopsis. Maybe Coprinopsis cinerea.

Why Coprinopsis over Coprinellus? I have trouble telling them apart. And they still look more like dried out Corpinellus flocculusos to me over Coprinopsis cinerea.

I'm not sure exactly what separates Coprinopsis from Coprinellus, but a general rule of thumb is; Coprinellus have micaceus granules on the cap and some have orange-mat mycelium (basically Coprinellus micaceus, C. domesticus, and things close to them. Coprinopsis have woolly veil remnants on the cap, and Coprinus are large and ringed. NONE of these rules is absolute.
So going by that and the general gray colors (without much tan on the center), I thought it must be Coprinopsis. I have just now learned that Coprinellus flocculosus is one of the ones that doesn't fit the "rules", by having a "woolly" cap. Seeing as there is both dung and wood chips present, they could be either...or something else altogether. There are plenty of small, grey-capped, woolly coprinoids out there...

Here's a table outlining some of the differences between the coprinoid genera. Like Bob said, the main separator is veil tissue/cap texture.

went out to the woods today and looked around a stream and found some more..well my girl did.

first species;
Habitat: was found growing near rocks and around some vegetation. these mushrooms were growing on a buried log and this area has been in the 50-75 degrees. lots of leaves made it hard to spot them, along with being under logs and shade.
Gills: young specimines had cream colored gills or white and the older ones had brown purple gills. the gills are attached
Stem: 2-3 inches long, white hollow stem, smooth
Cap: young ones are ovate then it seemed to go to conical, then seemed to lift up edges and caps were cracked. color is yellow to white to tan on the knob. texture is smooth but older ones had sorta like craters in it?? like circle dimples throughout the cap.
Spore print color: purplish brown
Bruising: none
Other information:

species 2
habitat: growing on fallen tree trunk and its some type of polypore

species 3
found growing on buried log in the same area as species 1.
gills: white and close with a cinnamon brown spore print and attached gills
stem: thick meaty solid stem. white smooth 3 inches long
cap: has a cleft in it is was about 4 inchies wide
spore print: cinnamon brown
Bruising: nothing noticed.
was a cool day..found some cup mushrooms too and some other kinds of white fungus growing on trees..saw some frogs also.nature is stress relieving.
i chose to pick the coprinellus for the last mushroom..thats what i labled it on my project anyways.thanks guys, i appreciate it.

"Species 1" miiiiight be some tyupe pf Hypholoma sp.
"Species 2" is certainly Trametes versicolor (aka "turkey Tail", great medicinal properties)
"Species 3" No clue with what you have provided...

You need to work on the light balance of your camera. There is a bit of overexposure going on which leads to falsified colors. Maybe play a bit with exposure, gamma and offset.
