Psychedelics and their purpose
    #14267662 - 04/10/11 03:40 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

So in a hypothetical world lets say drugs are legal. What would be the purpose of the psychedelic experience in that world? How would society/culture/politics be different?

It would certainly change for the better (the world we live in).

They would be used for a combination of meditation, medication, and recreation, as they are today. Of course the medication part would be completely legal and practiced by doctors.

even if psychedelic where 100% legal including like pcp, it would not be used by that many more people I think. Because most people dislike going outside of their comfort zone and the "known" good ol' reality.

My friend and I have always agreed that shrooms cause you to be who you are supposed to be. No lying, no jealousy, no ego, no anger, appreciation of nearly everything, etc. I feel that if widely accepted, shrooms would serve an important purpose of "making the world how it should be."

Obviously I'm not talking about high doses of shrooms, as no real work would get done. However, I feel that a smaller, more manageable dose on a regular basis for would make for a much better world.

It would be a huge and revolutionary restructuring of the fabric of our society. Look at the 60s and early 70s. I think for starters we could see a lot more technological innovation better suited for our endowment.. not like the bullshit Go Green Campaigns Corporations use for marketing, but some real much needed change in how we co exist with the planet.
Anyone I know who's done psychedelics outside say they feel much more appreciative of Mother Nature.

I think though it would be chaotic because how many people would waste their time gobbling anti depressants and seeing therapist when they could chow down on some mushies or drink ayahuasca?

In short. T Mckenna said the world needs more great ideas, I think psychedelics appropriately meaning "mind manifesting" could provide exactly that.

Just my 2 cents.

Ehh, maybe for a while.  But with psychs so readily available, I think it's inevitable that their use would increase.  And as more stories spread about their awesomeness, more people will become curious.  Of course, some will also be forever scared away by the horror stories, but good trips vastly outnumber the bad.

I also think it would become something ceremonial. I also like to belive that the world would be more spiritually unified and not seperated by religion as much as it is now.

As most people know who have tried psychedelics they are boundary dissolvers. It would be a crazy world if people recreationally dissolved boundaries. Imagine if people for a living explored the mind through psychedelics like Philosophers explore morals, ethics, reason, and logic through the intellect. They would be modern shamans and they would be more accepted into the public thought like in the same way authors, scientists, and politicians are. It wouldnt be writen off as the ramblings of a crazy junkie anymore. Imagine if people went to a 'church' to hear someone talk about the experiences and ideas Terence Mckenna talked about.

Terrence McKenna is a bit of an odd guy. I don't know if I'd have him as my Guru. His claim that Psychedelics are Absoloutly harmless is a blanket statment, and really irresposible. Someone who's intelligent and well versed with Psychedelics should know better than to make ANY statment in absoloute terms. ANYBODY who's saying anything is ABSOLOUTLY anything is effectivly spreading propaganda. And yes there is pro-drug propaganda and lies TOO. It's not all ANTI stuff comming from the establishment. Bullshit comes from both sides.

Psycedelics are useful, but the guy seems to have his own agenda. Keep your mind free, and find truth.

It's not that folks are affraid to leave the "good ol'reality", it's that their illusion ought to be maintained: television is this, none of what tv is actually exists. This insecurity entangles. Such is the explanation I find for how "noisy" (mentally) our world is. There is no fear of leaving "good ol'reality" if you see it.

Terence did address psilocybin's potential to destroy him. And sincerely I think too little has by him been articulated regarding how profound the experience is. Though the ability to he lacked not.

The idea of graduation from the culture does emerge from a rather profound place. And most 'round here seem on the way to do that, there thrown, redirected by his sayings. For that is immense credit.

Tye-dye shirts would be fashionable again, we'd take 2012 seriously, Joe Rogan would finally get the respect he deserves, and Pink Floyd would unite Roger Waters to rewrite the national anthem.

Oh and some people would switch from hard drugs to soft drugs.  And according to those wacky studies from yesteryear, criminals given LSD would no longer recidivate ushering in a Brave New World.

What if many of us are jealous, lying, ego-centric angry motherfuckers by nature.  Perhaps psychedelics magnify and amplify these traits rather than introduce or coax their opposites into the user.  Psychedelics have done nothing to cure me of these characteristics(and from the look of it in The Pub, OTD, and PE these guys need to eat a lot more mushrooms to get to their appreciative, honest, compassionate and loving selves.)
