Looking for roommates is draining...

I haven't ever had to go through this journey before as I've lived with my boyfriend and a friend, it's just been easy. Now we are looking for a house, and are trying to find some roommates via craigslist....it's crazy how physically and emotionally draining it is though...I didn't realize it would be. You get replies from people who seem to be stoked on the situation, and excited to meet and then they just end up blowing you off I don't understand why people even reply saying they want to meet if they would rather not, isn't that waisting MY time AND yours?
Does any one have any tips for finding roommates? What are some good filtering techniques?

i concur. I'll be moving to get my masters soon and I won't know anyone in the area, at all and I won't be living on campus either so I'm anticipating having a hard time/being lonely

yeah its a pain in the ass.. i was looking at this sweet ass 4 room space in the most central part of Philadelphia possible. cheap, awesome location, huge house.. i cant tell you how many people i had to meetup with who just bailed at the last minute.
someone else rented it before i got the chance. i was soo pissed.

I don't understand how people can meet a stranger on the internet then after just a few conversations decide to actually live with that person. That is something I would never do under any circumstance, I can see many undesirable things coming from that decision.

i use couchsurfing.org when traveling. staying with strangers is no big deal. you have to realize that both of you are hesitant about the situation.. its a mutual trust thing you need to have.

well it's definitely not the IDEAL situation...at all...but we have asked all of our friends who would be willing to get a house and they are all doing their own thing right now. Our roommate is moving out to get his own apartment with his girlfriend and we can't stay here and pay the rent that was split in three before...soo...yeah...we are trying it out...just seeing what happens...I mean..you never know who you're going to meet can be really good or really bad

Couchsurfing is one thing, moving into a house full time with a stranger is another. Completely different situations.

IME it's worked out great . I've lived with 3 different random people, and all of them have been great. I've had WAY more trouble living with friends than complete strangers.

ive never lived with someone i was already friends with but from my sisters experience it sucks a lot of the time.
she lived with her best friend for her first year of college and she began to realize that her friend did some shit that she hated and her friend realized my sister did some shit that she hated.
eventually they both got super pissed at each other and it ruined their friendship
for them.
i can easily see how living with a friend and realizing it sucks would be worse than living with a random person and realizing it sucks because its easier to just drop off contact with a random person than your best friend when you get mad.

true. Things can go sour both ways for different reasons.
the thing is we would only be able to afford an apartment if we didnt want roommates, and we really really really want to live in a house with a yard and have a huge garden

hmmm... theres no apartment complexes near you where you can have a backyard?
theres one around here thats $700 a month for a 2 story one bedroom townhouse and you get a ~10' x ~15' backyard.
its like having a house, only your neighbors house is literally right next to yours. obviously you dont get a nice backyard like you would get with a straight up house but its still kinda decent.
