LC health
    #14267044 - 04/10/11 01:14 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

So I inoculated a 1 quart jar of %4 Karo solution with some of the solution from another LC. That mother LC has tons of fibers floating around in it, and I've used it to inoculate other jars with success. That was a week ago. Now the new jar has several long fibers growing in it, but if I swirl the jar, it looks as if there's a cloudy presence. almost looks like smoke inside the jar. The mother jar had none and still has none of this smokeyness. is it contam? can't really get a picture due to the light nature of the smokey texture..

any suggestions welcome.

Shine a flashlight through the jar and take a picture just like with agar dishes. But even so, it's very difficult to spot contaminations in an LC. You will have to inoculate a jar to find out if it's still good.

Do a small test jar or test on agar?  But really when in doubt, just start over.  You still got your mother jar right?  It could be the mycelium eating some suga.

best i can get. The cloudiness looks concentrated on the top, but it's uniform throughout, the light just makes it look that way.

Haha I have a post in advanced mycology about using gs in lc's. Can you add it to a lc with myc in it and will it help, and what dose?

Karo in the daughter LC as well?

Sounds like it has some bacteria that was likely picked up in the
transfer process.

Works wonders and GS survives sterilization....

is that to put in an LC if it's suspected to be bacterial? where do you get that stuff?

thanks a bunch! I'm wondering if it's worth it to try and find that stuff or to just toss the LC's and make new ones.

i've had pretty rotten luck with LC's so far. the only reason I do them is because I have the jars laying around and an entire bottle of Karo. I'm actually surprised the mother LC's made it considering the lids slid off for a few seconds a few times (don't ask...) in an open room.

Will it clean a contaminated lc? I put .5ml in a half pint of lc, and am just wondering if it's wasted or not.
