Pressure cooking
    #14266508 - 04/10/11 11:03 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

another quick question, is there anything wrong with pressure cooking bulk bags of WBS/jars of WBS too long? like an extra hour? ive been doing everything right, (as far as im concerned) and my bags always get contaminated. Im starting to think it has something to do with my pressure cooking techniques and nothing with my innoculating procedures. also, anyone feel like debating the step of taking floaters/ sunflower seeds out of the WBS? too much conflicting info! so ill just continue with my trials and errors  untill i figure it out. im doing bags of WBS plus jars so i can see where the contams are coming from in the jars, wether its through the Grain or from innoculating. also question... ha is it necessary to flame the needles? or can i soak it in alcohol before attatching it to the syringe which is what i did. this might be where i go wrong. time for a cigarette!

as long as the pc does not run dry there is no harm in a extra hour. If you use big full bags of spawn you might wanna consider pressure cooking longer to get the inside sterile.

I've over cooked WBS by an hour before without it causing a problem .

I remove the floaters , personal preference , and never noticed any ill effects .

I would think it has to do with your steile prcedure when inoculating that is leading to your contam problem . What are you inoculating with? LC , or MS ?

I never used flame , just alcohol , but since you're having a problem you obviously need to do something different . Try flame sterilizing to start with .

Rinse, and rinse, and rinse some more.  A good thorough preparation of grain will help you prepare for the PC.  You want perfectly clear water.

You know what else floats?  That's right, not the Titanic.  I take mine out just to rule out any issues or possible problems.  I also take out the little tiny seeds too, just to prevent my grains from clumping or bursting (not necessary to do, but it is cheap birdseed)

Make smaller batches, try a different brand.  Experiment with smaller portions, and develop your own technique.
