Maybe the pepper spray is what he needed. How's that for discipline. The parents won't do it, and the cops can't very well bend him over their knee and smack the crap outta him. He needs to know that if he's going to act in this way, there are going to be consequences. And what better than pepper spray? No physical damage whatsoever. Pepper spray just activate nerve cells, but it leaves the body completely unharmed.

i was a professional curser at 9. my parents worked at a summer camp so i could go for free. 200 boys together for 7 weeks means you learn everything real quick. every fall when i had to go back to school it would be about a month before i had the effortless, artful, and automatic swearing under control. i was a very nice kid though, never got in much trouble, i just loved saying bad words

I lived in a very small town when I was little. Everyone there was extremely polite, much like the small towns in the South here in the states. We didn't do summer camp. My mom stayed at home, and we would have the whole neighborhood over to swim and play. And we didn't really have TV in South Africa either, so I couldn't pick it up there.
Things changed after we moved to the states though.

Cops aren't inherently evil.
Pepper spray was completely warranted I feel. Like BBL337 said you don't need a cop taken outta duty for some petty shit like a 8 year old with a sharp stick. I also agree with the people saying "OK, he's only 8. TAKE HIS FUCKING STICK AND CUFF HIM"..
But what people don't seem to take into account is that these cops didn't end up harmed. Neither did the child other then TEMPORARILY. I've been pepper sprayed several times and its not as bad as people make it out to be. It sucks sure. But sometimes it's the safest option when dealing with psycho-fuckers like this 8 year old.

no, those cops physically abused an 8 year old child, if they couldnt diffuse the situation without macing a 50 lb 8 year old they are fucking stupid ass morons who should be faggot ass mall cops!!
The cops did the best thing they could have in that situation. Would you want to risk being stabbed when you could non lethally diffuse the situation? To be honest the stupid little brat deserved what he got. Kids need to learn that when you threaten violence, there are consequences. The real villains in this story are the kids parents. It sucks you can be a shitty parent and probably let the tv do most of your parenting for you, and when the consequences of your actions catch up with you, you can go and blame it on the cops.
They treated him like a common criminal. Boohoo. He threatened to fucking stab someone!

The options were: Bludgeon kid with 'nightstick', Spray him with pepper spray, taze the fuck out of him, shoot him, or let him hurt himself or someone else. Cops aren't trained to brawl, they're trained to subdue and apprehend.
Even an 8 year old with the amount of aggression apparent in this specific kid can do with that weapon the same that anyone else can. He was treated as a dangerous person with a weapon. If anything, the cops did him a favor. Who knows what getting tazed would have done to an 8 year old. Cops are trained (or at least, supposed to be) to eliminate any threat to the public without increasing the danger to themselves or those around them. Pepper-spray seems to have been the most effective and least damaging tactic they could have used.

I think it was less to prevent the kid from hurting them, and more to prevent the kid from accidentally hurting himself with the stick while he was taken down. If you grab him and the stick accidentally pokes him in the eye or something, you would have a really big problem.
I think they were more worried about the kid's safety. Pepper spray is completely safe and does zero bodily harm.

Oh noes, he stabs you, at worst a flesh wound. I think the officers of the law have a civil and moral duty to ensure the safety of everyone possible. That includes people who may be dangerous. Welfare of child > Officer's welfare.
This child is obviously nuts and a danger to everyone around him. Crazy child's welfare < officer's welfare. He obviously needs some real punishment and I think pepper spray was a pretty good way of doing that. So what if it hurts him for a little while? Pepper spray is less dangerous than being stabbed, which is what could have happened to the officer if they tried to disarm him.

I 100% agree with this. Police should never have to put themselves in harms way if they can avoid it when dealing with crazy people, whether or not that person is a child. Plus, he had already had police called on him twice before for his insane tantrums. He needs to learn about consequences, obviously his mom isn't teaching him.
In another article, the kid is quoted as saying "Just kind of like whenever anybody upsets me, like I just kind of want to tear them apart. I think it's not ever going to go away. It's just who I am." He obviously has serious issues.

The answer to any given problem is always superior force. It's important to teach this to kids at a young age, especially the violent ones with anger issues.
Hopefully the kid learned something from his mistake.

I could kill you with a stick. Maybe an eight year old can, maybe he can't- but it's a dumb risk for a cop to take.
Cops were not wrong in this case.

I don't think what the cops did was wrong. The kid was trying to stab people, pepper spray isn't going to do any long term harm, not like they shot him or something that is obviously excessive force. This kid obviously needs some mental help.

8 year olds do a lot of things that are beyond normal reasoning. However as fucked up as this kid is I find it hard to believe it was necessary to pepper spray him. I haven't met any 8 year olds I'd be afraid of taking a sharp piece of wood from.
yeah, that was my thought, drop kick the little fucker into next month, when he wakes up from his coma he'll wish he'd have gotten the pepper spray
