are gym. palmicolas active? i seem to be finding some conflicting information regarding this.
also, is there a convenient source for KOH or NaOH outside chemical supply houses?
thank you in advance.
edit: here are pictures of suspected gym. palmicola, as ID'd by Alan.

These are a match macroscopically for G. palmicola with the saffron yellow colors and the off-centered stem. I've read that they bruise green and are in the aeruginosus-luteofolius group, which leans towards them being active.
Some species of Gyms could also be slightly toxic.
Your best bet for KOH is probably a supply house. Most Gyms will turn red to red/black in KOH anyways, so that's not a very definitive test.
What do they smell like?
Nice finds!

i would say they almost smell like old, damp tea. a mushroomy odor with a hint of "tea"ness. hard to explain, not overtly powerful. the spore prints i took on white were orange-brown.

If you need KOH "ph raise" is potassium hydroxide in roughly 20% concentration.

KOH reaction caused the 'skin' of the cap to turn very dark red.
although macroscopically identical, and from the same patch, some of the gyms are not bluing. is that normal for gyms?
Thanks, jackgreen, for the KOH tip! i just happened to have PH raise under the sink.

You can get food grade KOH (90% purity) off of ebay under the name potash flakes
http://www.amazon.com/Grade-Devil-Potash-Potassium-Hydroxide/dp/B0039CIQTI
99% NaOH is also available from same source asdrain opener, lye, soda lye, or caustic soda
BE SURE TO USE SAFETY GOGGLES AND NITRILE GLOVES WHEN HANDLING ANY STRONG BASE LIKE KOH OR NaOH!!!1
Also, not all "pH raise" is KOH either, it's usually Ca(CO3)2 or some like Ca2+-based weak base. Look at the ingredients list. Here's an example contain NaCO3

id say so. alot of gyms i have found showed no bluing reaction whatsoever and were extremly potent ( for gyms anyway). Ive also found patches of gyms where the aborts were staining blue, but the mature specimens showed none. (mind you this was in the midwest)

i guess i only have one more question. does a KOH reaction of the type i observed (cap surface darkening to very dark red) rule out the toxic look alikes, such as galerina?
this is literally the first time i have found any gyms, as i have always only hunted on dung, so i would like to be as sure i as i can be that i don't have a bunch of poison.
thanks for your collective patience, y'all.

These aren't Galerina. Pholiota and Tricholomopsis can have red reactions.

It was all you, man. Thanks for sharing! You should save a specimen to send to someone who's interested in scoping it out.

i will save a specimen.
i literally found a bunch of them because i noticed that a patch of spanish moss that had draped over a fallen palm trunk was dark rusty brown. i picked the moss apart, and sure enough, were some of these mushrooms that had shed so many spores it was ridiculous. i have never seen that many spores off of so small a mushroom before.
thanks!

80-150g's chopped up fresh or 8-15g's dry. boil water. add sugar, lemon and fresh ginger. steep mushrooms in water for 30-45 minutes. stir occasionally. strain through coffee filter. make sure to gently squeeze the extra love out of the gyms through the coffee filter with the back of a spoon. serve chilled or warm. enjoy.

i hope i don't die.
just in case i start to hurt, what would be the toxins to alert the ER doc to, since those can't be galerinas?
