Sun Expels huge CME 400X Bigger than Jupiter: corollation between CME's and natural disasters??

Coronal Mass Ejection and Earthquakes
On February 15, 2011 a large Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) occured on our sun. On February 27, 2011 Chile was hit with an 8.8 magnitude earthquake. On March 10, 2011 an even larger CME occured, the following day March 11, 2011 Japan was struck by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. Another possibally larger CME has been predicted to hit by April 2, 2011. Does anyone believe it's possible that there is a corollation between CME's and natural disasters here on Earth?
Below is a NASA article about the March 10, 2011 CME.

Well at least we know about it. If it is bad then the grid should shut down for a moment.
Damn I just watched an episode of "the universe" that discussed this.
Bring it! unless it caused the pnw to finally break again. that would be bad.

400x bigger then Jupiter?
I doubt CME's are in any way related to earthquakes the times in between ejection and earthquake are erratic, but theres gonna be some heady Northern lights when it hits the earth.

No, nothing the sun does affects the Earth in any way. This is why if you ask a Climate Scientist, they'll inform you that CO2 drives changes in temperature. The more or less exact fit between sun spot frequency data and increases in temperature is purely coincidence, whereas the correlation between CO2 and temp proves that rising CO2 levels directly cause temp increase and are not merely the result of oceans warming and thus releasing more CO2.

What about that solar flare that knocked out communications in China or something like that?
The sun releases a lot of radiation towards the earth during these events and it affects our magnetic field

Ok, so the sun expels one motherfucking huge fireball. Is there any documentation that it will head anywhere near earth? I mean there is 360 degrees of variation for it to hit one tiny little target millions of miles away that's like 1/100th the size of a marble.
It's like shooting a 120mm howitzer and expecting it to hit his target, even if he's shooting in the opposite direction.
-------------------- Same thing happened to me when I played Neil Armstrong in Moonshot. They found me in an alley in Burbank trying to re-enter the earth's atmosphere in an old refrigerator box.

I'd say it's more than 360 degrees since the sun isn't 2-dimensional.

X class flares have knocked out satellites plenty of times. They also disturb the earths electromagnetic field which can cause natural disasters.

Its not a projectile and its inversely expanding radiation Its way more likely to hit earth then you would want to believe.
then again anything anybody says about disasters is always mocked and instantly shrouded in tinfoil by people like wakeboard.

You're right. I was thinking 2 dimensional.
The higher dimensional version of angle (or radian) is the 'steradian'. There are steradians of solid angle in a sphere.
But note that the steradian is 2-dimensional, as it mapps out the 2-D surface of a sphere. Traditional angles are 1-dimensional.

It's really weird when you seriously contemplate the fact that the entire human race could be completely wiped out by any number of comological/geological events.
(extensive use of italics for emphasis)
For me it's the final proof that we should all just chill the FUCK back, stop killing each other and enjoy the fireworks when they come.

I strongly believe we're in the final stretch. People can say all they want about 2011 judgement day or 2012 or whatever and how its not going to happen...but the signs are all around. The world is in such shit condition. All around. Wars, debt, increase in earthquake activity and other natural disasters, swarms of large solar flares, global warming, the shit thats going down in the middle east, the worlds new radiation problem. Shit is NOT going to get better

Shit has been getting better for thousands of years, and continues to get better every year.
We have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years left as a species.

Yeah, when you factor in exponential population growth, if we are around in hundreds of thousands of years we'll be living inside each other's shoes.

Species dont grow exponentially, they grow logistically. Human population growth is slowing and is projected to stabilize in a couple hundred years.

Yeah. America's currently in debt as is most of the world. Nations are building superweapons to use against eachother. America just entered a war that it has no business being in (despite the allies we were "helping"). Japan just got monsterfucked and they were huge on the worlds economy. Population is constantly multiplying and not only that but stupid people are having stupid kids causing a large population of stupid fucks. We're over consuming earths natural resources, we're running out of places to put trash, and we're running out of places to dispose of nuclear waste.
We're fooked

We both made claims without giving evidence. You just happened give evidence after I asked for it. At the risk of commiting a falacy I'd say MOST PEOPLE would agree that population is rising exponentially, therefore for most people, the burden of proof is on your black ass.
Anyway, I flicked through that document and it's very interesting. But like the man with the fluffy pants said, it's not just population increase, or simply the number of people on the planet, it's the impact that those people have on the environment and on each other.
With only 6 billion people we're doing unbelievable damage to the environment, hacking down rainforests, depleting our fossil fuels, etc. What impact are 7-9 billion people going to have? Especially in 2050 when natural gas and oil supplies are projected to be almost depleted.

Yes the environment changes, and humans are very well suited to adapting to new environments. Furthermore, it only takes a few thousand of us to keep the species going. The notion that we are due for extinction anytime soon is ridiculous. The notion that the natural disasters and political unrest we witness today is somehow special or different than it has been in earth's past is equally ridiculous.
Things are going good, the human race is doing better as time goes on and we have potential to live for hundreds of millions of years into the future. The crocodile did it, so can we.

So you would disagree that humans are damaging the environment?
I don't think the human race will ever die out completely, but it IS possible. If there's another meteor impact like that which killed the dinosaurs and we aren't prepared for it, we stand no more chance than T. Rex.
Realistically, there's any number of scenarios that could put us in an "end of the world" type scenario where a huge percentage of the population could die. Not everyone, but enough for it to be an apocalypse.

Some aspects of human life and our rapidly increasing technology could be seen as "better than before" but at what cost? With the population on the rise and the demand of natural resources from the modern world we are raping the planet.
We still have no balance with nature whatsoever. If we do not change are ways soon earth will not be a very nice place to live.

Yes some sort of apocalyptic event, whether catastrophic to the point of extinction, or just powerful enough to eliminate majority of life on earth is very highly probable. Just because humans and science are constantly evolving doesnt mean we're prepared for the worst (not that i'm implying anyones saying that specifically). At the rate that the world is going we can only hope for progress and the continuation of the generations, but we also cannot rule out the possibility that maybe we have hit the end of our civilization as we know it.

Exactly. Despite the world and the "roadblocks" it has been experiencing for thousands of years, you have to take into account the fact that thousands of years ago, they didnt have global warming, nuclear projects, the industry that is destroying the planet and all the continuous harm to the environment. They didnt have Mcdonalds cups and fission batteries to litter centuries ago. We are deteriorating our home

That is nature's way. It has happened to humans before, and it will probably happen again. When a species is under pressure and the population shrinks a lot, then there is less space occupied in the eco system and species narrow down in their genetic diversity. This happened to modern humans from a volcano in the south pacific, we lost a lot of genetic diversity. A species gains genetic diversity when the environment changes, other species go extinct and the left over species now have room to fill new niches in the eco system. This is what is happening now, and has been happening since the end of the last ice age. The environment has changed, some species died, new species filled the gaps, ramped up the pressure and the cycle continues. This is how new species get made. At this point, over the next thousands of years our species has a greater change of bifurcating than going extinct. But surly this will not last forever.
But the notion that earthquakes, wars and solar storms are somehow connected or somehow novel is crazy. This is part and parcel of natural history. The world is getting better for a lot of species, and humans are one of them. You can use many basic metrics to judge this by... the amount of calories available to eat, the amount of joules available to do work, the life span, infant mortality, increasing population, genetic diversity, the list goes on... Global poverty has dropped drastically in even the last 30 years. To argue that things are getting worse you have to literally discount all of those metrics as somehow 'irrelevant' and then appeal to a mythical standard of the way the world 'should be'. There is no way the world or eco system 'should be'.
Its not necessarily because the world "should be a certain way". The examples of all the war and economic and global problems imply that the world will be close to extinction because as man finds more and more ways of advancing in technology, we will eventually enter a new age of arms races and man will blow eachother up. Its human nature. If global events dont wipe the human race out, humans will wipe the human race out.
People are fucking destructive
Edit: and i would rather not bring religion into this but many different cultures have references to the end of the world being signified by these global epidemics.

Also look at what "the greater good of science" has done for us with the Fukushima plant and the radiation it has expelled. There hasnt been any immediate deaths, but 20-30 years down the line...That will do some serious damage. Should i also mention Chernobyl?

Well I mean theres not too much we can discuss on the fireball until it hits the earth. Maybe something happens? Prolly not but it will one day and I think it will be soon. 1859 all over again.
Some believe these events from the sun can cause earthquakes and such.
Again we must wait.

Werent there massive solar flares before the Chile earthquake and the Japan earthquake?
They say California is next on the ring of fire. I have a bad feeling about these flares

Thats all it is is a feeling, if they really were related there would be a distinct time frame between flare and earthquake and not the erratic one that there actually is.

On February 15, 2011 (SHROOMISM'S MFING BDAY) a large Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) occured on our sun.

We dun goofed. On the real though we have been raping her for all shes worth the past century and shes gonna lash out with a vengeance when climate change really gets rolling, Its like a dam failure it starts off with a small crack leaking a miniscule stream of water it isnt anything really not even noticable but that small stream starts eating away at the foundation and the super structure till eventually its not just a small leak and the whole structure gets weak enough that it catastrophically fails. There are so many delicate systems that create a compounding positive feedback that grows exponentially once the earth warms up enough.

if you go to the spaceweather website they talk about it alittle bit but it basically sounds from what i can tell from all there mumbo jumbo talk is that its going to slightly hit the earth? then like in the bottom left hand corner they say list a bunch of percentages for 3 differen things and the highest one says 35%

Mad_Larkin said: Realistically, there's any number of scenarios that could put us in an "end of the world" type scenario where a huge percentage of the population could die. Not everyone, but enough for it to be an apocalypse.

Im not surprised if the radiation off flares would affect us somehow. The neutrino count goes up when they go off. Also we been having flares a lot lately. Which could mean anything. Maybe the aliens are force fucking the sun to help rebuild humanity.

worse case scenario is that there are some auroras.... geez

yeah, i mean, space weather and auroras are a passion of mine.
things like this happen ALL the time, and even are earth directed sometimes. on extreemely rare occassion they will fuck with satellites in orbit, radio propagation, and electrical grids...
there is some theory out there that it can lead to pole reversal, but that is still up for debate.

I know all about the Carrington event. Crazy stuff. Thing is it will happen again. Some believe its due to happen really soon as the sun is nearing its solar maximum in the 11 year cycle. I would imagine the world as it is right now would not be ready for another Carrington event. I think it could truly change the world and possibly for the better.

HORSESHOE ASTEROID DISCOVERED: Astronomers from the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland have found that recently-discovered asteroid 2010 SO16 has been following Earth around the Sun for more than 250,000 years. Relative to our planet, the asteroid describes a horseshoe-shaped path in space. Strange, but true!

Yes and yes.
Still might go back to school (art school) but 13,000 a semester is a little outrageous for someone with the talent and know how. Something like 8% of graduating art students find work afterwards.
But may I ask you what the fuck that has to do with anything??

I'm just curious... you keep saying things to the effect that we can't think for ourselves, etc.
the #1 thing I learned in college is that the best ideas are borne out of a combination of thinking for yourself AND considering the thoughts of others. too much thinking for yourself, and you end up living in your own little world, too much letting everyone else think for you, you end up losing track of who you are

Im sure you can somewhat relate to me on this. Its hard to take a lot of people seriously on this site when some many are so quick to pop in here and say Oh NOs Its The End Of The World. When all they had to do was click and read for a moment.
Im sure you can also understand that sometimes it takes a "good" title to get people to view the post in the first place. So thus I tend to be a little harsh with my comments when people ignore the substance of the post. Which is also why many cannot stand me on these boards
Then again. We are participating on a mushroom forum. What should I really expect??

okay, so... there is SOME logic behind the concept that a solar flare could theoretically be potentially causing an earthquake.... but the numbers have been reviewed by smarter people than i, and they have determined that there are solar flares all the time, bigger ones that preceded the most recent earthquakes, and that there is no Direct correlation.
However, our planet at its core is partially a giant ball of molten Iron, some of which I would imagine could be magnetic. There are several forms of magnetic iron that naturally occur in the earth, magnetite, taconite, etc....
so, it is not SO far fetched to say that since that we allready know that auroras are caused by the opening up and altering of the earths magnetic field, and that the sun causes this alteration.... WE could theoretically debate that the shifting poles of the earths crust cause the molten core to act differently....
perhaps in the same way that the moon effects tides of the earth, the sun effects the inner flow of the molten iron in our earths core, which the tectonic plates sit on?

The only reason I pointed out how inaccurate the title was (Fireball about to hit earth, you really don't see how that's stupid?) because you kept claiming that you weren't trying to insinuate some kind of disaster from this post.

Only pointing out the disparity between posting a sensationalist doomsday-heralding title, and then denying that he is a doomsday heralding sensationalist
I even stated the title is an exaggeration earlier in this thread. Only just now has it only been about the title on youre part.
heres another post I made earlier...

DeadHearts said: Im sure you can somewhat relate to me on this. Its hard to take a lot of people seriously on this site when some many are so quick to pop in here and say Oh NOs Its The End Of The World. When all they had to do was click and read for a moment.
Im sure you can also understand that sometimes it takes a "good" title to get people to view the post in the first place.
Get over yourself already. This isnt a doomsday thread like you wanted it to be. Sad you went after the title becuase it was the only thing left to argue about.

Not at all but I did think it was related for a moment. Doomsday is never going to happen.
