Picked up a bag of this at Walmart yesterday($3-4). I got pretty excited to see the fabled "jiffy-Mix" (in any form)

This stuff looked legit, the contents as described on the back: "This mix contains 45% to 55% sphagnum peat moss, 45% to 55% vermiculite and lime for PH balance,, AND organic wetting agent"??

You can see the little specks here. Also doesn't look like it has any verm in it at all. Im thinking about giving it a try on a few trays, ill add more verm for sure.

Anyone had experience with this stuff? anyone know about organic wetting agents?? i've heard jiffy mix discussed but this looks different now that i bring it home.

I've used it a few times, in my limited experience. I've found that it seems more susceptible to overlay than a 50/50+ casing. I've just been getting it up to field capacity then throwing it into the PC.

I have used it once or twice as a casing layer and it works great.. As far as overlay I have been growing for around 6 years now and haven't had it once while casing or not casing my substrate..

i just brought some to field capacity. It took on a better consistency so I'm going to use it straight. Its in the PC now without the weight.
I'll try to remember to report back eventually. My only concern were the little specs(wetting agent)

Yeah the great overlay bogeyman. It doesn't really exist.

Well, overlay does exist, it's just not considered to be what it once was. Overlay used to mean that you had overgrowth on your casing layer and there were no points where primordia could form. Now it means that you have a dried yellow mass on the top of your substrate, casing or not, preventing water penetration or further growth. The first example is "Stamet's" overlay, an old example. But we all know that's not true, or else uncased coir substrates wouldn't be so popular
