wbs jars 90% but top is not
    #14261960 - 04/09/11 06:25 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

My quesion is, would it hurt the mycelium if i shook them once more just to get those seeds colonized before they dry out. Its been about a month, and thats normal for the B+ strain ive worked with. Just a thinner mycelium growth then say penis envy where your forking it out because its so thick lol. The top does on some jars have spots of white.

  Thank you,

That jar is dry. You might consider injection some sterile water into it and then shaking it.

They don't want to colonize for shit once they dry out like that.

Should i just shake off the top layer into the trash and use the rest as spawn? It should still be viable for spawn no? If the seed is dry would injecting sterile water even help?

#1 Why is there a coffee filter on your jar ?  Is that your only filter type ??

I have a half inch hole with pollyfill and a coffee filter rubberbanded to the jar over the top to avoid contamination. But still allow for gas exchange.

If you have polyfill/tyvek/filter disk..  Then you should not be using a coffee filter because they do not provide hardly any protection from contams..  Also what they could do though is cut down on the amount of gas exchange which can cause your jars to stall..

So you may have 1 of 2 problems and or both..

1 Jars dried out..

2 Not enough GE so your jars stalled..

I need to figure out my plan of action, i could take the filter off and shake and see what happens to all the jars, or put in water. I think putting in water is a little risky. But what also concerns me is ive done it this way in the past with the filter and had great results.

i think i should probably have a go at taking the filters off and shaking. But.. If it ends up being water content would i still be able to fix it later on?

A half inch hole for a gas exchange port is huge.  Gas exchange is meant to take place slowly.  That aids in keeping the grains properly hydrated for mushroom mycelium growth, as well as, high levels of CO2.

I think because your GE port is too large, the top of your substrate has become stalled.  anonjon's right.  When substrate becomes stalled, mushroom mycelium won't colonize it.

If your mycelium becomes stalled due to dehydration, it'll recover, but have a recovery period.  This is no good because it opens doors for invader spores to take a foot-holding onto the substrate before the mycelium can recover and finish colonizing the substrate.

Agree I didn't see where he said half inch hole I kinda skimmed over it..  But yes that is kinda big, but still doable if you stuff the polyfill kinda tight..

lol i really dont want this batch to go to waste, i can shake half of them and see what happens perhaps? and take off the filter.

Id'e leave the filtering material in place and shake to see what happens, for sure.

Give it some time after the shake for observation.  If your mycelium has become stalled, it's going to take a while for it to recover the shake (if it does at all).

A half inch hole is still doable, yes, but in this particular situation, we're beyond the question of how much poly fil is to be stuffed into what sized hole before sterilization, as well as, beyond the point of no return on being able to change the stuffing amount of the poly-fil at the stage this particular grow is in.

Say its having trouble recovering, at that time would it be possible to add water and fix the situation? Also im worried that at this point i could take the top grains off and still use as spawn. decisions decisions.

The shake will be enough to redistribute moisture evenly through out the grains, enough for the mycelium to recover.

If the mycelium doesn't continue to grow or shows of contamination with in a few days after the shake, this current grow is expired.

Alright, thank you hamloaf, welcome to the world of mycology  patience patience. Ill give half of them a shake, and see what happens. the other half ill skim and use as spawn. Sounds like a good plan of action to try to salvage what i can. Damion5050 Ive been using ure tek and wont turn away from it! uve brought me success. And i hope u read this message.

Happens to me sometimes.
After the shake, it should re-colonize, even if it's thin.

Hey doc, i just shook them and the jars were nice and thick, took some manpower to shake them and break it up. it looked so lightly colonized. I have high hopes now for it to recolonize. including the grains at the top that are now mixed in.

Like the myc was all stuck together and wouldn't break up?
Or did it all finally break up into loose flowing grains?

It broke up nice into grains but it was nicely colonized i could tell, in nice big chunks that then broke apart easy.
