How I've been controlling my drinking

I have been drinking very heavily since I was 16 (now 22) and I have found a way to be able to go out and drink with friends without overdoing it.
I drink a cup of coffee a half hour before I go out and that causes me to not crave alcohol quite as much. My stomach is shrunk for the first 2 hours of drinking which means I don't "down them" like I usually would.
I suppose I have a weak stomach so the coffee makes a huge difference for me.
I understand to some extent why people in Alcoholics Anonymous drink so much coffee now. It really does help with cravings... plus it goes well with cigarrettes.

Heh, always seemed to me that switching from a drunk to coffee was an odd move, with that tense near-seizure feeling that accompanies withdrawals in the short term.

Congratulations!
It's good to hear that drinking a cup of coffee before you go out cuts your alcohol consumption. Does it actually cut your cravings, or does it just limit how much you can drink? I feel your next step would be to replace some of those drinks at the bar with water or maybe cut back on your going out. You could always suggest an activity to your friends that doesn't involve drinking.
I've been addicted to a few substances throughout my life and one thing I've learned is that it's not much healthier to place one addiction with another. Your cigarette comment leads me to think you may run into problems with other substances; so, as a heads up, don't let coffee become one!
..and keep it up!

I'll always have drinking problems so I'm just happy I have a temporary solution.
Keeping away from it on a daily basis can be difficult
I just like waking up the next day and actually remembering conversations with my friends I had the night before.
Blackouts suck when you know you were with a shitton of people the night before. I tend to be a closet alcoholic the other days of the week.
My girlfriend drags me out on weekends though so it's nice to not make a fool of myself

I feel you..
Ever since i took my very first drink , ive been blacking out. Blacking out, is one of the most scariest things ever. Imagine waking up and you remember nothing. Imagine waking up, and your in the hospital.
closet alcoholic. Hiding it and even getting semi drunk while alone are signs of alcohol problems.
Your about my age. I have to stay active all the way up till a late time. That keeps me from drinking.
And even that has failed me tonight

I think as of today I've decided... I'm gonna stop drinking for good
I took a long break from alcohol and never desired it anymore, and then one day I got the thought well shit one or two drinks won't hurt. Fell in love with the booze effects all over again... but did well, one or two stayed for a bit more, and then soon I stopped caring and thought it wasn't so bad, had 4 or 5... it only escalates from there
And here I am now, for the past 2 weeks I've had like 6 drinks minimum each night
Gonna just stick to the lovely Cannabis...
drinking makes me so fucking lazy and not care about anything..

Alcohol has always been my drug of choice so it makes life complicated. I have done many different varieties of drugs and alcohol was always the drug that felt right. I need to constantly fill my time because if I am alone I will probably ended up walking down to a gas station to grab a 6 pack.
When I'm not drinking I constantly have nervous energy.
I thought for a while that booze was my medicine. I'm trying to get out of that mind frame and use the energy to get things done. Killing booze just feels way to good sometimes though

I think alcohol is a pretty destructive substance to be addicted to and if replacing it with caffeine/coffee works, it's an excellent trade off in terms of side effects on your life.
Also, I've learned that cravings are often times just misappropriations of how to deal with some feeling you're having. I used to instinctively go to my fridge and grab a beer and found that I was totally neglecting my higher self's desire to consume less alcohol. So now, if I crave a beer, I wait a minimum of 15 minutes to think it through. I often times will still drink the beer, but I've started with a commitment to consciousness that will typically last through the night and keep me from drinking too much. Maybe something like that would also help you.

You know, I worried about my drinking for a bit, and then all of a sudden, I realized the novelty of it wore off. Beer gives me heartburn and stomach aches when I wake up now, and I always end up in those cycles of wanting more. "Well, I'll take a break today.... Ok, I'll have this one beer. Well, I had one, whats two? Ok, I'll take a break tomorrow, and since I'm doing that, I'll have that third beer..."
Always went like that for me, until I started noticing the unpleasant feelings. So I took a week off, and then had some wine, which was very very nice, and I slept like a wee little baby. I had 3 beers a few nights ago, and I think it was the last straw, atleast for this phase. I'm going to but my consumption to drinking one with certain meals(pizza and things), and maybe stick to wine, but still not full time like before. Keep it to weekends or something. The only reason I'm actually getting more now is to have with my Morning Glory seeds, but after that, who knows if I'll still want any.
So yeah, basically I worried about it for so long, that now the novelty of drinkings isnt there, so I dont crave it anyways.
