Also, wasting implies that it could be used but we elect not too.  This is not the same as basic unavoidable losses like radiation and friction.

There is a lot of waste in a more general sense. Like the ice machine on the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, first melting ice and then freezing it again, all powered by generators running on kerosene flown in by military aircraft

Still, I waste very little electricity, especially during winter.

I'm curious where you get those numbers from.

They're not quantitatively founded, but based on the accumulation of the following losses:
- Losses in power transport (roughly 7%)
- Losses in installations due to phase inefficiencies (can amount to up to 90% e.g. in in-house light dimmers)
- Inefficiency in appliances; esp. light generation is extremely inefficient, but also think of excessive/unnecessary friction in anything equipped with motors
- Inefficiency due to improper use: chargers left in outlets, tv's and pc's left on standby, and inefficient software coding leading to excessive heat generation (nobody from the green movement has ever targeted the software boys, but there's an opportunity there!)

I have no real sense of what we use most of our electricity for, but most mechanical and heating/cooling applications are much more efficient than 5-10% and I would guess most electrical energy goes into movement and heating/cooling.

Heating is obviously very efficient. Cooling isn't, although arguably, your typical aircon operates at efficiency levels of over 100%, but since the excess heat is usually just dissipated into the air, this wouldn't be an appropriate way of looking at it. However, since aircon systems will also need to take away the heat generated by (inefficient) electrical appliances within the room, the effective power use of those appliances increases since the aircon will use more power to take away the heat they generate.
