Mushroom Extracts to Increase Pins? aka fruiting hormones?

Received The Mushroom Cultivator in the mail the other week and I've been fascinated by may of the topics that Stamets and Chilton discuss. One of them I was particularly interested in, and wondered if any advances have been made since the book was published in 1983:
In appendix 4 the concept of "fruiting hormones" is brought up, with several brief explanations of previous experiments. What I seem to understand is that several different species that failed to fruit on agar (marasmius in particular) had a methanol extract of young fruitbodies of another species (he lists agaricus brunnesces, lentinus edodes, flammulina velutipes and pluerotus ostreatus) applied to it.
However, there is no explanation for why this seemed to work, or for the particular species that were extracted.
What I was curious about in particular was if one could make an extract of the species being grown with young fruitbodies, and then apply it to a casing or cake that is yet to pin, to increase the number of pins?
For example, if one was to take several young fruitbodies of a p. cubensis, make an extract (I believe a simple water extract would work as discussed in the article), then spray it onto the cake or casing, would it actually increase the number of pins? Or would one need to experiment with using the extracts of several other species?
I would love to hear some input/feedback on the idea...and perhaps someone would care to attempt this with me and compare results?
I saw this was brought up in http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6712322 but not pursued....so why not bring it up again?

Or you could spawn grains with a few invitro fruits into your substrate. I have noticed faster time to fruiting by doing so. However, a lot has been learned since then about fruiting strategy and it's already possible to get a massive flush where you can barely see the substrate. There really isn't much room for any more without having lots of aborts. RR

I was thinking this might be a good strategy for substrates that seemed to have trouble fruiting despite ideal conditions (ie temp, humidity, fae), or enabling later flushes to be as prolific as earlier flushes, despite there being less nutrients in the substrate or the age of the mycelium.
It is also something that I don't believe has really been experimented with on an amateur level, despite its apparent uselessness.
So you have had success speeding up the fruiting cycle by using spawn with premature fruits? Did this seem to increase flush size to any noticeable extent?
In any extent, if I were to attempt this by using a water extract of young fruitbodies to mist cake or casing in lieu of plain ol h2o, how long do you think the extract could stay sterile before becoming a contaminant?
Sorry about all the questions...this is fascinating for me as I have never really explored the scientific side of this hobby besides some occasional agar work.
