Pasteurizing Hpoo?
    #14260175 - 04/08/11 06:41 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I have 5 BRF cakes colonizing of which a couple im going to spawn to horse poo pretty soon. Ive looked around and read up on pasteurizing teks, and RR doesn't show jack shit on his site  so im here askin which way should i do it?

I read the oven tek isnt too good and that water works better for heat pasteurizing. So can i just mix 50/50 verm/Hpoo and add distilled water until field capacity and just shove it all in a plastic bag and tie it up and soak the bag in 175F water for an hour?

Would that work okay? Im trying not to get any additional water in the poo from the soak, but intead just use the heat from the water and put the poo in a tied plastic bag that the heat can go right through but the water wont.

i think you want the substrate to get wet. i used mesh paint straining bags and 5 gallon plastic buckets from home depot to pasteurize. put substrate in mesh bag, pour close to boiling water over it so its submerged, close lid and let sit.

some tips that I learned the hard way

- double bag it
- get as much air out as you can before submerging.
- tie the necks of the bags to the handle of your pot, and be sure they stay out of the pot as it heats up.
- use a weight to keep them submerged that won't tip over
- when you stab in your meat thermometer, don't poke it through the outer bag
- wringing out the substrate sucks a lot. not to mention if get water in the bags, you leech nutrients out and have to reestablish your water content
- once you get to 140F on high heat, lower it dramatically or off completely. the residual heat, especially if you lid the pot, will carry it up to 150-160F.
- 140F for 2 hours or 165F for 1 hour has worked for me. 185F = death of the good stuff

hope that helps. there's some pasteurization teks in my sig link if you want some more reading

Will my idea of adding water before-hand work? As long as it is field capacity before i put it in the pasteurization and the plastic bag i have it in is tied and sealed,..it should still be field capacity when i go to spawn.
