That may be the biggest post I've seen here yet. It's an impressive post, regardless, simply based on the number of great photos.
Great photo work!

I think that the specimen after "Ganoderma sp. HVL06" is a Fomitopsis and not a Ganoderma. I may be wrong though.

What is the flesh of Fomitopsis species like? If I remember correctly, it had tough, pretty rubbery flesh, not brittle like most species of Ganoderma. It wasn't the only one that had flesh like that that I came across in India though. The questionable G. colossum was like that, as were a couple in Mumbai.

Wow, thank you for this post. I feel inspired to get out and start taking mushroom photos again. It has been a few years.
I'm living in northeastern India at the moment, in Manipur state. The rainy season is fast approaching, and I suspect the mushroom season is as well. As this is a state rarely traveled by outsiders, I'd like to contribute to documenting some of the species in the area.
I'm a bit of a mushroom novice, so I'll need help from this forum for any identifications. Given the climate here and the number of cattle, I suspect there are some actives to be found as well.
How did you like Manali? I'm considering a trip to that area to do some rock climbing in June. I understand that Shimla and Manali are two of the more popular hill stations with the local tourists, but I'm hoping it's easy to get away from them and do some wandering about.

Good to know abouto Manali and Shimla... thanks. From the looks of it, Manali and area is more my speed... I think it's about time I planned that trip.
I've been in India since early february, working for a NGO. As it stands now I'll likely be here into early 2012.
We've had a bit of rain lately, so I may have the chance to get out and do some hunting this weekend. As and when I stumble upon some fungi, I'll start a thread and share my finds.

Wow! I just got on shroomery after a huge lapse. Although I was expecting something like this Tripsis, I wasnt expecting THIS!!
What a super good thread. I had a blast looking through all this. Prolly help me with a lot of IDing in the future. Ill add some follow ups of some of the finds you have here so you see what has become of them, atleast the ones I recognise.
Thanks, that was wonderful. Feel like Ive just been taken on a trip all over the region, places I would love to go, and now I think the inspiration to get over to some of these areas is this thread.
Peace.

I've seen a very similar mushroom in Greenville, SC and this is the first time I've run across it again (assuming it is in fact the same). The one i came across before was a dark bluish-grey, and i would assume much more mature in age. Really curious if anyone has an id on it. thanks

Cool stuff Tripsis
If anyone was wondering where Volvopluteus came from... early this year an article was published showing that the genus Volvariella was polyphyletic, so they created a new genus (Volvopluteus) to house species that the molecular data showed not to fit in Volvariella.

Indeed, I've got the article. A very interesting read. I'm curious if there are any macroscopic characteristics that tell Volvopluteus and Volvariella apart from one another.

None that I'm aware of. It's so annoying when phylogenetics don't correspond to macroscopic features.
