Computer not working after installing new graphics card

I tried to install a new graphics card by putting it in the pci-e slot and powered my computer on but although all of the components powered up the monitor didn't show anything, so I shut the pc down and took the card out and just used the onboard graphics card like before but now although all the components are powering up the monitor is not showing anything even with the setup how it was before.
Everything was working before so what can I do now?
The motherboard is ASROCK K10N78 and the graphics card I was trying to install is: Radeon HD5450.

Did you install the video card drivers?

Not to start with...
For now I've fixed the problem by taking the new card out and clearing the CMOS by reseating the battery.
At least I can use my PC again
I'll try again with the graphics card tomorrow, thanks!

Before you do the install, disable the video adapter from within windows. Also check which video device is selected in your bios, usually you have to change from onboard to pci-e. Install video card and you should get a generic display, install drivers and enjoy.

This is not a driver issue. Otherwise, there would have been display during post and boot. Do you have a speaker connected to the mainboard? I.e. not through the sound card, but directly to the speaker connector on the mainboard itself (near where the front panel leds and the power switch are connected to the board)? If not, connect one. If you have, what beep code does it sound when the problem occurs?

starting from the beginning.. are you sure you pushed the card all the way into the slot? and did you plug in the power adapter (if applicable).

It's working when I boot into Windows 7 but not Server 2008 so it must be a driver issue.

This illustrates how important it is to post accurate and complete information right away.

You originally claimed "but although all of the components powered up the monitor didn't show anything". Obviously, the monitor did show something when you powered on the computer, such as a memory count, mobo logo, etc, then turned off after the OS started to boot. We waste our time trying to figure out a hardware problem, when it is obviously software, because you failed to post an accurate and complete description of your problem.

Actually the monitor didn't show anything at the time I made the thread, it didn't show the mobo logo, memory count etc, just black. I took the new graphics card out and went back to using the onboard one but still had the same problem...I used my girlfriend's laptop to make the thread and found on another forum someone suggesting to take out the motherboard battery and put it back in which I did, this worked allowing me to use my computer again.
I gave up trying to sort my new graphics card out for the night as I had other stuff to do, the next day I came on here and read the reply from txhc4life which was very helpful, I did what he said but still the new graphics card wasn't installing correctly then to test that the card was actually working I booted into Windows 7 and installed it there and it worked fine.
To start with however my problem was that the monitor was not showing anything even after going back to the onboard graphics, so at the time it was hardware related and I solved the problem by taking the motherboard battery out and putting it back. The original problem had been solved. The secondary problem was getting the graphics card to work on my Server 2008 OS, but that wasn't what I was asking for help with.
I am thankful for the replies I got and as usual also thankful for the time spent trying to help me.

The original problem was probably a BIOS setting, usually with no video at POST (assuming PSU is sufficient and card is seated properly, etc) as txhc4life said, is a result of "Primary Graphics Adapter" or "Init Display First" in the BIOS being set to Onboard, just have to set this to PCIe or PCIex16 so that it prefers that slot for the primary graphics. It was probably set to onboard and resetting the CMOS set it back to Auto and it auto detected the card.
If you are still getting no video after changing that setting, then you need to get back on the onboard and boot into Windows, go into Add/Remove programs/ Programs & Features, and uninstall any onboard drivers, then go into Device Manager, find the onboard gpu and disable it.
But yeah if it works fine in Win7 now it's definitely just a driver issue. Server 2008 has crappy driver support for aftermarket cards. I work for an Nvidia-based GPU company and we don't even have driver support for server 2008. We basically tell people you can try to get it to work with other drivers and it's possible, but it's not guaranteed since it's not officially supported. ATI isn't exactly renowned for their world-class driver support either, and I have no idea if ATI drivers can support it but I have heard of people getting Nvidia drivers to work in server 2008 with XP/Vista drivers with a modified .ini file. But how ATI drivers work I have zero clue. Google is your friend in this instance.
