Lipa's Pasteurized Fuel Pellet Tek * 27
    #14258160 - 04/08/11 11:47 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Here is a GREAT method to pasteurize hardwood fuel pellets for sawdust
bags. I was taught the method by a friend on the boards and
was told that it was "Lipa's Pasteurization Tek". For the records
I did not create this method, but upon searching the forums for a
tek or post to share the information I could not find anything.

I figured that I would create a pictorial guide for this method to
spread the information around to the community and share an easy
and effective way to prepare fuel pellets substrates.

Materials Needed:

Colonized Grain Spawn
Hardwood Fuel Pellets
Filter Patch Bags
String
scissors
Metal Pot
Measuring Cups
Oven Mitts
Zip Ties

NOTE: The density and "grade" of sawdust can be very different
between brands of fuel pellets, and even between bags of the same
brand. Before using this method I would suggest sacrificing 6 cups
of fuel pellets to do a test run to make sure your fuel pellets will
reach just under field capacity. Some brands require more water then others.
That being said the ratio that works for me is 6 cups of fuel pellets
to 7 cups of water. If you can squeeze your mixture and any water comes
out it is likely to wet

Procedure

1. Measure out 6 cups of fuel pellets and then place them into your
filter patch bag.

2. Measure out 7 cups of water and place in your metal pot. Bring to
a boil.

3. Once boiling remove from heat, turn your stove top off and bring
the water to your work area. You should place a towel down to protect
your work surface from the pot. Don your oven mitts and open the
top of your filter patch bag as wide as possible. CAREFULLY pour
the boiling water into the bag, go slow as the bag has a tendency
to close up so you may have to place the pot down, readjust the bag
and pour the remaining water in. Use common sense, work sober and
be careful.

4. Twist the top of the bag closed with one hand (Wearing mitts) and
with the other kneed and mix the fuel pellets to spread the moisture
around. Keep doing this until you can see no visible hunks of fuel
pellets. Be careful contents of bags are very hot, and steam escaping
from the mouth of the bag can burn you.

5. Using your string tie the top of the bag off tightly.

6. Place bag/bags wrapped in a towel and leave overnight to cool
down.

7. Repeat for the amount of bags you need

This method gives me 5-5 1/2 lbs of sawdust substrate per bag

Inoculation

1. Prepare your work area and materials

2. Untie your bag and inoculate with 1/2 a L (Qt.) of grain spawn

3. Twist the top portion of your bag and then apply your zip tie
nice and tight to seal the bag.

4. Kneed/shake/roll your substrate bag to distribute the grain spawn
evenly throughout your sawdust substrate.

5. Finally label your bags, place in your colonization area and repeat
as many times as needed.

This method works for several different types of edible and medicinal
mushrooms(Of the wood loving variety) and is a very quick and easy way
to prepare substrate.

I have now used this method for Shiitake, and Reishi and below are
the corresponding grow logs:

Reishi on Pasteurized Fuel Pellets

Shiitake on Pasteurized Fuel Pellets

Shiitake on Pasteurized Fuel Pellets 2

Blue Oysters on Pasteurized Fuel Pellets

Shiitake 75 on Pasteurized Fuel Pellets

Great summary.

What filter bags do you use?
I've noticed that RR recomends a certain type of filter for more sensitive species, Shiitake, e.g.
Since I don´t have a flowhood and my "glovebox" is too tiny to handle bags, I'll give this a try.

Much thanks for this.
Very inspirational indeed.

This is awesome Tek bro! I´ll try it next time, seems very easy.
But I can´t understand why some sterilize substrates? what are the advantages of sterilization?

I have both .2 micron and .5 micron bags and I have played around with
both.

So far I have fruited 3 blocks of shiitake, 2- .5 micron and 1- .2
micron.

I know RR says the .5 micron can lead to premature pinning in shiitake,
but so far I have gotten away with it. All my supplemented bags are
made using .2 micron, and pasteurized bags using .5 micron.

Toni: You sterilize your substrate when you add any supplements.

When you add different brans or flours to your substrate it requires
sterilization or else it will contaminate.

I have 11 supplemented bags of shiitaking colonizing as we speak, and
while it requires a lot more work on my part, RR has said it will
provide a bigger yield.

Thanks for posting EM, very informative! I have available some large hardwood sawdust pellets that are used instead of logs for burning, having seen your success I might give this a go.

Great write up EM!!!

I have used the same method several times. Some comments I'd like to add (if you don't mind):
you'll want to find your ratio of pellets:water before getting started. When I did this I found my ratio to be 5 Cups pellets, 4 Cups water to get perfect moisture content. This is very different to your 6:7 so it can vary between batches of pellets. An insulated cooler works great for storing the bags and an electric tea kettle brings water to a boil very quickly. Also, I found that adding the water at 185F brings the core temp to 160F, but again your mileage may vary between batches of pellets. Once you figure out these numbers it's a great way to prepare a lot of bulk sawdust

Here are some links to grows I did using this method:
Lion's Mane
Reishi

Thanks for the addition information tao, every little bit helps.

I also :pm:ed Lipa and asked if he had any input to add, and I will
update when he sends me a message back.

This method is indeed a great way to prepare a bulk of sawdust substrate
fairly quickly.

P.S LOVE the reishi grow log, I can never get enough reishi pictures!

Would anybody mind posting a link to some bags of fuel pellets or their manufacturers??  I haven't seen anything like this in Australia and i wonder if we have something similar with a different name.  But essentially are they saw dust that was compressed and made into pellets??

Turns out we do have them here, but they're not wide spread.  I'm researching retailers and costs as we speak.

Do you ever add bark or other larger substrates to add a bit of variation?

I personally do not at this point(Simply because I do not have access
to any at this moment).

I gather that it would not hurt and would only help.

Because if you added bran you would have to sterilize your substrate.

You can use gypsum. Don't make the mistake of trying to disolve it first. Took me a couple of attempts to learn that gypsum just sinks like a rock. I was using very fine stuff too. I read somewhere that it will disolve in hot water. So, I thought if it did I could evenly coat the sawdust. Not the case. Just add the gypsum to the bags on top of the pellets, then add water, seal, and massage the bags.
