Is senescense similar to, or related to, the loss of telomeres in humans?

YES!  Nearly all eukaryotes age because of this same process - fungi included!

On a basic level, if you understand telomeres, their function, and what happens to them over time, you understand senescence.  As mentioned above, other genetic errors can also happen due to chromosomal abnormalities or environmental factors.

Sweet... my human genetics class finally paid off!

If I remember correctly, cell aging is determined by the Hayflick Limit-- each cell can only undergo 50 divisions. At least, in humans.

With each division, telomere length shortens. As it progresses, short telomeres contribute to mutations and diseases that we associate with old age. After it's divided 50 times the cell dies. Cancerous tumors are made up of cells who don't obey this Hayflick limit and just divide infinitely without dying.

This seems to be related to how cultures are stored at low temperatures, to slow the rate of cell division so that they don't reach their limit, whatever that is for fungi. When a culture is taken out of storage to be grown out, its rate of cell division speeds up again. Eventually as it approaches its limit, the culture succumbs to old age, mutations, DEATH, just like we do.

I'm no expert, just trying to piece together the little I know about cell biology, and contribute a little to this thread. I'd love to learn about the real deal with senesence!
