It appears it's okay to add spawn to theses bags in open air. Correct? I presume hardwood pellets are pretty contam resistant, like coir. Yes?

Yeah, it works fine for me. I Actually get more contams when I try to do it in my SAB. My SAB isn't big enough which makes it a pain and ends up not being 'still air' at all.

Yes it's ok, only real chance is a wood loving contam, such as another fungus or wood loving bacteria. I've had wood loving trich in the past on brown card, so it can contaminate.

Spawn heavily, otherwise the contaminates will win. Yeasts and green molds are the most common, though I have had lipstick mold and a cobweb once or twice.

With elm oysters (Hypsizygus ulmarius), what is considered heavy spawning? What spawn:sub ratio?

I've been doing 1 qt to 6 cups pellets with good success.
Since this thread is active again- I recently got an impulse sealer and wheat bran so I am ready to start supplementing- do I need to adjust the water content at all from this tek when supplementing? Obviously since I will be sterilizing the pasteurization is not necessary but I'd still start off 6 cups pellets to 7 cups water, and add 15% bran- just wondering what kind of water content that would need.

Yep! Do it all the time with almost 100% success rate.

Just based on my experience with cubensis, just about any time you add supplements, it requires some moisture adjustment, depending on how much and what you add. Whenever I start doing something different. I just do a mack run to check.
I've never used bran, but i imagine it absorbs water pretty well. Don't quote me though.

Yeah I'm sure I'll have to add water but there's nothing worse than seeing a line of water appear at the bottom that never gets colonized
Glad to see you over here sir- if nothing else edibles are exciting just for how damn many diverse species there are. It's a blast and I'm now constantly on the lookout for wild ones to take cultures of - plus being able to send live cultures through the mail to other members beats the snot out of spite prints- I feel like I'm sending my babies out into the world, and can be proud of them when they are able to feed someone a thousand miles away.

When I do this method, I prefer to do one spawn bag (3 dry quarts of wheat) to 6 bags of pellets. Though I have done as many as 10.
Travel agency, yea, you'll have to add more water. I'd try a just over a cup, if you're adding 15% bran. You're going to need to sterilize the bags with the supplement and add spawn in front of a hood. That's why I love this method unsupplemented. Boil an ass of water and make and ass of bags, in your living room

Yeah this tek has been fantastic and you can bang out a ton of bags quickly. But it seems most big producers supplement and I have the means to do it now (got an impulse sealer and my buddy has a flowhood I can use til I get mine built). I'll be running so side by side to compare.
Thanks azur! Good to see you buddy!
I'll try a cup of water with this run.

Hem man. Good to see you too. Sorry I haven't gotten those bags out yet. Been retarded busy. I'm out of town for a week, so when I return I'll jump in that. Do you have a big sterilizer? If not, I would just do this method. If you want to go bigger, pastuerize straw.

I raise thee thread in the name of knowledge lol
So what is everyone's take, are .5 filter bags 100% necessary? What type of contam rate increase and colonization time increase will I see with .2 filter bags Also what are the really necessary inoculation environment conditions?
Big thanks to any help!

Hey tgw, I use the .2 micron bags. They work like a charm. I believe RR suggested them on an old thread and his advice is pretty well respected on the boards. Also, the .5 are a bigger hole than .2 so I don't think you'll see evap and contam increase that way...as fast as the mycelium runs those things shouldn't be an issue anyway unless maybe if you're growing shiitake which take some time...so far I'm only acquainted with oysters so don't want to talk out the side of my face.

Hey cable guy, lions main usually is a slow colonizer . Probably not well suited to this tek. Maybe you have a fast one? I think standard is bags supplemented and sterilized. All the advice I've seen is do not get water directly on fruits just maintain cool and humid.
