Those supplements will necessitate full, proper pasteurization.
Good luck,

This is a good thread!! I will try it this weekend with Shiitake grain spawn.
The question I have about it is more like an idea: has anyone tried this tek THEN added properly sterilized supplement to the mix? I'm talking about bran versus extra grain spawn.
Thanks!

I have only added supplements before pasteurizing or sterilizing my substrates.
I bet that what you suggest ought to work, though all actions (especially mixing) will need to take place in front of a flow hood.
Sterilized supplements are a strong contam potential.
I am thinking that this will open avenues from contams, but it might work.
Good luck,
JD

I'm thinking along the same thought process as you JD.
Best off not adding supplements post sterilization as it opens up an unwanted/unneeded vector. It is possible if done carefully but not really worth the risk of losing things IMO.
In the end it would be a lot easier just to add them to your substrate prior to sterilizing.

Dayum! After reading and trying a bunch of other teks I was shocked to find this one. So easy! Thank you!!!
Also, they have 40 lbs bags of pellets @ home depot for I think $4.75 or something like that.
The bag says "hardwood" with a picture of pine trees. wtf?

You mentioned how to tell when it is too wet but how do you know if it's too dry?
thanks

Will it colonize on pine dust/shavings?

Depends on if you pre sterilize or pasteurize the chicken compost first. Supplements require sterilization.
This method works because the pellets are pre-pasteurized during the process of making them. If you want to use straw use straw pellets. Otherwise just put your straw in a pot of 140 F water for 30-45 min.

I'm curious which species do well on these pine pellets as well I've read about the cooking and compressing taking out the resins that prevent the mycelium to grow it I haven't found much on actually experience with it

You're specific about inoculating with grain spawn, but couldn't BRF cakes work just as well?
Birth them then break them up then add to the sawdust. Makes sense to me, so just wondering why you specifically wrote 'grain spawn' in the tek and not just 'spawn'.
I have these 90% colonized oyster jars growing on BRF, and would like to try this tek.

You can use the cakes. Most growers just use grain spawn and it is the norm so they say that. You'll probably notice too that it colonizes faster as well with your cakes because there will be more inoculation points in the bag due to it being granule-like and small unless you just use chunks of it.

So, to clarify, it's absolutely okay to sterilize fuel pellets after hydration, yes? This thread doesn't exactly imply that it is unnecessary, but I wanted to be sure that PC sterilization is not necessarily a no-no for the substrate in question.
I don't do fuel pellets over a coarser substrate, but this actually sounds very economical, and I like it.

Has anyone else tried adding coffee solution to the water used for pasteurization? Does it improve yield for lion's mane? Or other species?

It's inevitably going to get stuff on it while shaking the bag, and that's fine.
