Someone was asking about pasteurizing fuel pellets in another thread so I figured it was time for a bump ;-)

I use food pellets, Some thing though, just food grade.
Little more pricey, but not by too much. That way I can say "food grade" based substrate to the local co-ops

Added a current grow log, Shiitake 75 using this method of fuel pellet prep.
Side note:
I recently had a few bags of shiitake end up being to wet, which caused pre mature pinning. As stated in the original post make sure to run a few tests to see what your ratio of fuel pellets to water works out to. The 6:7 ratio was needed for my first bag of pellets, but upon opening my second and third bags I found that to be very different. Due to variance between bags of fuel pellets MAKE SURE to run tests to find the perfect moisture content for that bag, before making up a big batch.

This is a great thread!!! Thanks for all the info EVIL. Are the pellets your using mixed hardwoods? Is it better to have mixed woods or just one kind of wood, do you know? I will be trying this very soon, i will let you know how it goes. I wish i had a culture of reishi... Ill have to get one of those soon.
ProffessorP, what do you mean by food-pellets? Can you explain or even give the brand names?

The pellets I say are "Hardwood Fuel Pellets", does not indicate if it is a mix of hardwoods or one type.

Great thanks alot, im going to grab a bag tomorrow and get this rolling. I ordered reishi spawn today, and i already have shiitake. Im going to try this method with those two species first. Has anyone tried lions main with this method? After i try out those 2, ill give LM a try, i have some left over spawn from inoculating logs/stumps.
Thanks again Evil

Lion's mane grows fine on fuel pellets. I don't do them using this method but it shouldn't really matter.

Thanks monkeyK, Yeah sterilized pellets would definitely grow LM. Im interested in trying it using Lipas Tek, should be interesting. Im excited to get experimenting with this low tech and NRG efficient method.

you simply pour the boiling water, without controlling the temp? so easy?

Sure. That's how I pasteurize most everything. Works fine.

I add the water at 185F. The core temp will drop to 160F almost immediately as the pellets expand with water.

First experiment(26/5/2011):
Tried to follow +/- EM's sawdust/H2O ratios, disregarding that I was using coarse wood and cardboard sawdust not fuel pellets.
Procedure:
- 2 species: H. ulmarius and P. ostreatus
- 2 blocks (1 of each species): wood sawdust
- 2 blocks (1 of each species): wood sawdust+cardboard sawdust
- Spawn ratio: 1:10
Results:
- 3 of 4 blocks have excess water (should I drain it?)
- 1 block (P. ostreatus) was trich contaminated and discarded.
- The mix blocks (2 left pics) are preforming better than the wood sawdust

Second experiment(4/6/2011):
After re-reading the tek and comments, tried to get this right, so:
- Following Pitchercrab's advice, measured and adding little by little cold H2O and squeezing it until finding the right field capacity (20cl H2O to 1l wood/cardboard sawdust).
- Added boiling water.
- Sealed the bags, shake.
- Put them on a tub, covered with a bath towel and kept in the sun for insulation.
- Made some with plain cardboard sawdust this time for P. djamor, ostreatus and citrino.

Once again, many thanks for writing this up.

Thanks for adding your research to the thread brother!
As you found out what works for one with the ratio's of water/sawdust do not always work for all. Im in the habit of running a test for every new bag of fuel pellets I open, JUST to make sure my mix will not be to wet or to dry due to manufacturing processes, chip size ect.
Glad some of your experiments worked out for you, cannot wait to see some fruits!

Anything is possible, but id have a hard time believing that it would be commercially viable/reliable in this economy anyway. With that said; dont get to excited, but ive done up to %3 bran, with a high spawn rate of aggressive oyster spawn. Colonization time was decreased and yeild was increased. I only made 2 bags like this so i wouldn't give my results any weight. Just throwing this out there; try it and find out for yourself what works; it truly is the only way to know
Good Luck

I've had decent results with lion's mane using this method. I use about 5% liquid coffee to the hot water, and I use the water when it reaches 185F. The fuel pellet bags are then sealed in front of flow hood, and have a shelf life of a couple weeks.

This Tek is pretty great. Still experimenting with coffee, bran, and other additives.
