It looks like dried herbs and it's packaged as incense. But it's not so innocent. It's called salvia, and parents in Gloversville went to their councilwoman after finding disturbing video on Youtube of their kids smoking it.
The video on YouTube has since been taking down.
"I was quite alarmed," says Councilwoman Robin Wentworth. "I was naive in knowing it was in Gloversville."
It was also flying under the radar of local law enforcement.
"In this specific case, the kids and adolescence were ahead of us," says Capt. John Sira, with the Gloversville Police Department.
Now Sira says they're playing catch-up. The department immediately began researching the product and discovered once ingested, a person can experience hallucinogen side effects and even loss of motor skills.
"Their basic dynamic of existing is impaired significantly," Sira says.
Perhaps even scarier - it's sold legally right here in New York. Still, Gloversville is taking action. District Attorney Louise Sira says if an adult provides it to a minor, they'll nab them for endangering the welfare of a child.
"It's a serious offense," Sira says. "And serves as the basis for a criminal record for a person if they're convicted."
Law enforcement has also joined up with the Gloversville School District. Superintendent Rob DeLilli says it's already being discussed in health class and he's hoping knowledge will overcome the peer pressure to try it.
"I do believe educating them on the ill effects and the dangers are our best bet," DeLilli says.
Right now, legislation to ban the sale of salvia in New York is currently in the Assembly. Gloversville officials say if you are concerned, contact your local representative in an effort to push that bill forward.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion even if its contrary to mine, but at least make an informed decision.
"once ingested, a person can experience hallucinogen side effects and even loss of motor skills." Really? You don't know the first fucking thing about salvia. Calling the hallucinations "side effects" is like saying drinking ten beers might make you a little dizzy. If your going to pretend you did research in order to make an informed decision, at least do the fucking research so you sound mildly intelligent

...when I smoked Salvia, I felt a definite force pushing me down into my bed - I layed back and closed my eyes, while listening to one of the more calm Shpongle tracks, and was shown some beautiful CEV's. After awhile of this (only like ~5 minutes in real time). I opened my eyes, opened my window to let in the daylight. The whole rest of the day I felt one of the most awesome/awe-inspiring feelings ever, just something like bliss, and calmness, and love... Sounds like some stuff that should be "the basis for a criminal record" eh. Anyone concerned should call their rep and tell them about a positive trip they had on Salvia imo...
I like how they say the "hallucinations" are *side effects* lol... no, if you smoke salvia its definitely the *main effects*

problem with that is most people dont have great experiences, or at least thats how i feel. low dose is ok, but when you actually lose touch with reality i find the trips quite difficult. and i HATE the body tension. not good reasons to make it illegal though

I'd say that in most cases the kids are ahead of you.

What the fuck!
I live in this piece of shit town and I just found out from a local news paper that they've 'unanimously decided to ban the use/possession/sale of salvia'
I don't even smoke Salvia anymore but I can't fucking believe I live here right now... holy shit.
