ID this poppy please
    #14252776 - 04/07/11 12:06 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I'm trying to ID this poppy in this beautiful pic I found while browsing:

Not a life or death issue if it can't be ID'd but I just wanted to know if there were any poppy experts that could give me a hint.  Just beautiful and might want to try planting them someday. The only way I know to ID somniferum is if it has more than 6 petals but I can't see any of them head-on.

don't think that's a "good" kind?

flower bulb isn't round enough.

If you're looking for the "good" kind i think the general rule is;

1. no hairy stalk
2. round bulbous pod.
3. right color pollen

Also note the pollen color on the top of those; purple means its no good, i think you want it to be more light/tan/light brown/green before you're getting close.

shins is right on the money. it def isnt an opium poppy. i usually use the leaves a guide, but the fuzzy stems gave it away as not being a somni. i think the roheas post was on the money as well.

pretty flowers regardless

I have somniferum if I wanted to plant those I just wanted to see what my avatar most likely was if I ever decided to plant some like it. Just so many varieties of plant that fall under the poppy umbrella. After looking up some Rhoeas that definitely fits the bill. Even has an interesting active ingredient in it that can be used to help with sleep(non-narcotic of course)

Thanks very much.  :thumbup:
