I just started listening to the Dead a few months ago,but I'm not sure what albums I should pick up.The amount of material they put out is just overwhelming,I don't know where to begin. That's why I'm keeping this thread to studio albums, there is just too much live stuff.Anyways,I would like to hear some studio stuff first so I can compare it to the live versions. So,without further ado, please post the top five Dead studio albums.
Mine (so far) 1.Anthem of the Sun 2.Aoxomoxoa 3.American Beauty 4.Working Man's Dead 5.don't know yet,I've only heard these four albums

Mars Hotel is NOT live. But you're right about Infrared Roses. It's all live stuff.

Mars Hotel is DEFINATELY not a live album. I'd put my left pinky on the line on that one.

heh, Although the older music will always stand apart, Yalls should give a listen to In The Dark from 87'..It has more than just Touch of Grey.. Although every time I put that one in first song, the bass riff, then the guitars shiver me timbers i feel Great! Kinda a sad yet happy story why I dont have it anymore..I was homeless in and around Eugene Oregon when I met an old hippy travelen around..we smoked some herb with some rastas at a rest stop( was almost comical I woke with my feet hangin out of my truck to find a camaro with a hippy in it, and a van full of rastas all wonderin whos got the ganj ) I gave him a ride to the gas station where we fixed his tire..noticing I was out of gas he filled up the tank(which is good figurig I had no money and would had to have ditched it)
Me and dude hung out grabed some grub and talked while we shared a joint..I came to find out here I am journeying out of heartbreak and need for change when He is about to die of Hepatitis..He said he left his wife and kids(older) because he wanted to spend his last few weeks seeing the country, could see how sad and sick he was..we talked about the dead and I had a thought..one of the few things I brought on my travels was my very precscious GD tapes.. I gave him In the Dark.. And told him to listen to the first track.he said he couldnt take it, but I insisted and he smiled knowingly. Was a hard parting but we were two travelers and I had to be on my way.. wow sorry bout ramblin, just brang back an old memory..

That's such a sad story. I'm surprised he didn't want to spend his last days with his family. In The Dark is a good album. I love the West LA Fade Away. I always thought that song was kind of bland when played live but the studio version with all those cool sound effects is great.

He definately followed the band in the early days, and possibly thru the 70's and even 80's.. If its him I hope you have heard from him..he had been beating the doctors doom for 6 months when i me him..that was 2 maybe 3 years ago.

WoW that's got to be Don. I met him when I first started tour in the 80's.As were all the elders he was willing to show us new kids the ropes. He was a legend and had seen the band in the very early years. He retired to the mountains with his wife soon after. I would still see him at west coast shows and gatherings. He discovered he had hep. C(the bad one) and chose to live the rest of his life as the hindus do. When hindu's reach the end of there life they cut ties with there family and spend there remaining days on a traveling pilgramage to "get right with god".
I know most of the Dead family and this sounds alot like Don because of the path he chose at the end. Mabye it is just coincedence? If it is him you met i'm sorry to tell you he passed on
BTW homeless in Eugene heh. Been there done that. Spent a summer out at couger hot springs camping between tour's. Would come into Eugene and sell bud on 13th st.

that s not easy:
it's between about 9 or so albums:
I love the early ones like album one (Golden Road) through Workingmans and American Beauty well an the mid 70's stuff, such as Blues for allah and Terrapin.
I'm going to have a hard time with this one.
Good Post
