first wild oyster of the year! I.D. needed please
    #14255157 - 04/07/11 07:38 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

this is a giant oyster of some unknown variety, i would like to see if anyone can shed some light as to the actual variety of it beyond just "oyster". it measures 9" at the widest point and about 8" at the narrowest. it was found on a hardwood tree in the mid south and looks to be a little long in the tooth and unfit to eat. it has a wonderful earthy oyster mushroom smell and thick strong myc. here are the pics, enjoy!

Looks to be Pleurotus dryinus and it is past its prime.

Yeah, I thought about neolentinus too, but the caps aren't scaly. the ornamentation on the edge of the cap is also something that points to dryinus.

yeah it's almost gone, it's been raining a lot here there is no telling when it first popped up or if it's even the first ones. i looked into the dryinus variety and it could be it but i'll have to catch one fresh to see if it has a veil or not, but by the looks of it there could possibly be a veil remnant there. dryinus also turns yellow with age and this one is definitely yellow. the gills look jagged like that i think because its old and drying up at the edges. i know of a tree that grows a different kind of oyster ill try to find some on it soon. thanks for the input guys!

They aren't that common, they're the best tasting oyster IMO.
