My goal is to get hot for school in the fall.

I've got all summer....

I've been a little on the tubby side all my life, but I've had a life changing year.  This would be a good way to cap it off and get back into the groove of things...

I've been well into the unhealthy single digits at one point to see if i could do it while working out and I lacked abs .  Just not in my genetics really.  My stomach was hard as a rock and had some detail, like you knew they were there, but a 6 pack? no.

unhealthy single digits is it a bit of a stretch. I've been around 6% for 4 years, and I'm very healthy.

Do more weighted core exercises.

genetics say what is healthy for some and what isn't for others.  I actually get ill if I drop below about 8%, the lower the more ill I get.  I got down to around 4% and was miserable

exactly why I have gone up in body fat.  My body's ideal seems to be around 12% for me to feel healthy and have stamina, although unfortunately I went up to 15% and am working my way back down

If you really want abs:

70% food
20% cardio
10% core exercises

Very few people are ripped because they are lazy and eat like shit

This

If you aren't eating a salad or two a day (or more appropriately, replacing meals with salads) and eating fruits and vegetables for energy and calories + nutrients it's unlikely that you're going to see your abs.

This however has nothing to do with being healthy or being fit or being strong or being a good fighter.

Gaining abs are all about a bare minimal amount of exercise and eating few calories every day for many days.  Best bet if you want nice abs is to keep your daily calorie intake below 2k, maybe 1400-1800 if you keep an eye on your nutrient intake.

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables and eating no corn syrups (sugar), no sodas (sugar), no dairy (fat), no junk food (sugar carbs or corn grain carbs), and abstaining from meats excepting fish (lots of fat) really helps.

The biggest problem you'll run in to is feeling hungry.  This means your stomach needs something in it.  What you choose to fill it with is very important.  You can eat a lb of raw sugar and still feel hungry but have consumed 1800 calories or you can get so full you need to vomit after forcing yourself to eat an entire cantaloupe (or for the hard-asses, two of them) and only wind up eating 250ish calories per cantaloupe.

The trick is this - water.  You need to drink lots of it and eat foods that are primarily water.  Dried or dry foods are energy dense and you should stay away from them if you want to lower your fat (lower calories per day over time).

Before every meal drink a glass or two of water and drink a glass of water with your meal.  Never drink anything besides tea or water or coffee or other water infusions.

Exercise makes things a lot easier; specifically cardio.  MMA/wrestling, Running, boxing and swimming are best imo.  Not necessarily in that order.

You starve yourself? Whoa. I'm all for being in shape but a dude's gotta eat. I don't understand why people starve themselves. A girl at my work has an eating disorder.

I proposed a below 2k daily calorie limit, that's hardly "starving".  A real starving person would beat your ass for saying that and then ask for a sandwich.

1400-1800 calories a day refers to people who are heavily overweight or who simply want a 6-week schedule for getting rid of excess fat.  I'd say never stay below 1750 a day unless you're paying attention to your nutrient intake but you can be large, fit, strong, fast, and have an incredible amount of endurance with only eating 1750 calories a day.

If you were doing <1750 I'd say keep it short.  Maybe a week per month at most.  A salad so full you couldn't eat another bite might be 300 calories at it's highest.  This is easy business.

More is less brah.

This guy gives great advice for keeping fit and achieving your fitness goals.

Here's a workout vid for large, defined abs (not flat toned), honestly though nutrition is the major factor so you should check his site, tons of great information.

Maybe starving wasn't the right word. Withholding food from yourself to the point where you get hunger pains is no good in my book though.

I've been working on getting hawt for summer for months.

I'm about 170 lbs. @ 5"9 with a six pack. Been hitting the weights, doing cardio, and following a pretty spartan diet. :feelsgoodman:

When you're as big as I am, even cutting down to a normal person's diet feels like you're starving yourself.

I almost always feel hungry ever since I cut way down on my food intake because I started putting on tons of weight.

But thankfully, once your body gets used to it, trying to overeat makes you feel so sick that you don't want to go back to eating like you used to...usually the kind of overeating that makes you gain like 100 pounds in a year takes years to develop because overeating is such a tax on the body if it's not used to it.

I almost think people should consult a nutritionist or construct a reasonable diet that uses what they're already eating minus about 30% of the calories of their current diet instead of just abiding by the strict rules of any popular of the common sets of eating rules. I watched a documentary who went from something insane like 1200 pounds to 700 pounds and yet his "weight-loss diet" at the time of filming was so much food that it made me sick just thinking of trying to pile all of that in my face.

Most calories are passively burned just trying to keep yourself warm, that's why people in colder climates are generally more lean than people in hot climates even though they're less active on average. The brain of a coma patient alone burns something like 600 calories a day.

Also, most of the weight you lose from exercising isn't from the exercise itself because even with friction applied, a few (kilo)calories can do a lot of work. Really, cell division is such an energy-intensive process and is kicked in to high gear when the body has to fix the small tears in muscle and connective tissue that form from strenuous activity that you end up burning a ton of calories that way. That's why, even though a "cut" person with like 6% body fat can run 10 miles and shrug it off but an obese person of the same weight could run the same distance and they'd end up losing a ton of weight (assuming they didn't keel over because that'd be a lot of running for a fatass) after they were all healed up.

too much muscle mass is actually bad for your heart if you revert to a unhealthy style.

Something about it thickens the walls of your heart for more blood pumpage.
I stick with cardio and exercises. To hell with heavy weight lifting. Too dangerous.

If you actually care about your health, doing light/moderate weights at higher and higher speeds is actually much better for you than just trying to lift insane amounts of weight.

I eat around 2500 calories a day, am 5"8 and have a 6 pack showing and when I press into the lower area can feel more ripples.  Don't starve yourself that's fuckin retarded.  Run a lot, eat right, core exercises, burn your fat.

edit: you shouldn't be hungry.  When I cut I'm not hungry I just change what I eat, eat a shit ton of plants and fruits.  Buy a food scale and weigh everything you eat for a few days and get your daily caloric intake then just cut out 300 calories.  Also, drink a shit ton of water 24/7.  Enjoy pissing every hour it sucks.

No fucking lie, the first attempt I made this year at working out gave me a bloody ass eye. Sober, I attempt to pull off weight from one side of the bar thats on the bench.... and it flys up and the corner of the bar goes directly into the corner of my eye. As much as ive worked out in the past and added/removed weight from a fucking bar, I made myself look like a tool in front of my mom lol.

exactly what I said in more succinct form.

Thissongis -  I'd like to highly recommend against free-weights or bar weights and instead urge you to look at kettlebells.  The range of motion is such that you're always going to get a better work out with a kettlebell unless you're in some $10k gym, and even then I couldn't imagine having nearly as much fun doing linear, boring one-movement workouts for an hour or two in lieu of going outside to a park, putting your bare feet on the earth and grass and then working your body with your body.

Doing strength exercises with kettlebells you can be fully winded in 5-15 minutes depending on how frequently you use it.  Doing cardio exercises you can be completely exhausted in 5-15 minutes.

It's a very intense workout tool and can allow you do to a lot more with your body.  I'm many times stronger than I was last year and I have a lot more energy.

Most importantly it takes up no space and it is everything; you can work out every muscle in your body with a kettlebell (well scientifically I'm not sure about that but you know what I'm saying).

Very true, I used to weight lift 5-6 days a week in addition to running every other day.  Had nearly no effect on my abs.

I was poor as shit for a while and couldn't buy much food so i pretty much just ate rice and tuna.  That on the other hand gave me abs in pretty much no time flat.
