quick question about sterilization

so i read some where on here the other day that once you open the bag of vermiculite the next time you use it you should sterilize it. I have already opened my bag but it has a ziplock seal on it.
Do i still need to sterilize it? and if so can someone point me to the threadon how to do so

ALWAYS sterilize if the vermiculite is part of a substrate. Use a pressure cooker to do so. What are you using the verm for?

In a coir substrate, the vermiculite is pasteurized. You should sterilize vermiculite in PF jars whether the verm bag was opened or not. Vermiculite isn't prepped in sterile conditions since there's no need. On top of that you can't prepare a PF jar without everything pre-mixed so you really have no choice but to sterilize everything together.

What are you planning on doing with it? Most uses would include pasteurization or sterilization as a part of the process anyway, i.e. boiling your PF Tek jars.

Im making pf tek cakes, Im using vermiculite and brownrice flour to make a subtrate, and i know that i need to sterilize the subtrate in the jars before injecting spores into them. but i could have sworn i had read over an article that said you should sterilize the vermiculite before making the substrate as well as once in the jars... maybe my memory has just served me wrong and im just tripping lol

Nah, throw the vermiculite in the jar and sterilize it with everything else.
No need to pre-sterilize, sterilizing once should do the trick great.
The rest of your vermiculite won't go bad, either, so I wouldn't worry about that too much. It's fairly inert stuff.

Vermiculite is very contam resistant when you mix it in with the BRF it all gets PC'd at the same time

It might have been sterilize before the roll in the dunk&roll part of the method? It too is not absolutely necessary but a lot of people ensured me it's better to be safe than sorry, bake at 350 for 30 minutes, allow to cool fully then after the dunk, roll the sub into it.
Good luck!

Ok if you plan on doing pf tek then sterilize the verm, but it will be sterilized once you make the cakes and sterilizes them, so problem solved no needed extra step..
If you are using it in a bulk substrate then it should be pasteurized with the bulk substrate, no added extra steps needed..
If you plan on dunking and rolling your cakes just take the verm right out the bag and place in a bowl and dunk and roll.. The verm in this case doesn't need to be sterilized or pasteurized because you are using it on a fully colonized cake which is normally contam resistant..

You need to make sure you have proper air flow in your FC and it will keep the chances of mold growth down to a minimum..

I have a plastic container box from wally world, that i was going to drill holes in like that of the road kill pf tek tutorial videos, will that be sufficient enough?,
Also while im asking, i had a question about lighting with i haven't come across to many times. Do i need to have a light shining on my FC? i feel as if i would but unsure and if so, how many hours of light vs dark should i be doing... like 12light/12dark?
I have tried to read all i can but i still feel like i may be missing something? Thanks for all the info, this is my first time, so im trying to do it right the first go around.
