Want to find a career that helps people

So as i'm finishing up my undergrad degree with plans on going to law school, i'm finding i'm not happy at all with the original reason of choosing law. Both my dad and uncle have done very well doing insurance defense, and I thought I could be happy working with them making the ridiculous money that they do but inside I know the money won't make me happy. Looking at them, I know they're not all that happy.
So I started thinking about ways I could help people with law. I haven't gotten too far with ideas for this. I guess I could do a lot of pro-bono work and help people that way.
I also started thinking about how I might enjoy monastic life as a bhuddist or in the self-realization-fellowship or something, but inside I still want long-term female companionship and to have kids in the future. So while I could do this for a year or two, I feel like it would just be taking away time from getting out there and helping people in whatever way I end up choosing.
And I've always had the on&off idea of going to med school and joining something like the peace corps and helping people in need wherever I end up going. This seems closest to the idea of really helping people that I feel I need to do in order to be happy. Good chance I'll find someone along the way and fall in love or whatever [most girls I know who are into something like this are exactly my type] and it seems like the best route. But, I'll probably have to spend an additional year & 1/2 to even get into med school - probably end up getting in there @ 25 years old and be in 'til i'm 29. This kind-of bugs me since that's around when I'd like to start getting married and what-not, so it's a little bothersome..
So basically in the end I need to find a path that's going to leave me with the satisfaction of knowing I'm helping people, and since I'm a competent individual I want to take advantage of whatever kind of education will best help me do this.
thoughts? any good ideas on other ways to pursue a career that's really helping people?

Depending on your slant, a drug defense lawyer could do a lot of good (for some people)

Perhaps you could be a lawyer for the UCLA or NORML or some similar non-profit organization?

You don't have to make shit pay to help people, just saying. Whether you're making $150,000 or 50,000, you can help people with the law.
However, I do think that lawyers who work with indigent/low SES people are helping a more needy population than those that can afford private counsel and so tend to have more fulfilling work (just my $.02).
I think you should look into public defender work. You can utilize your legal education by working to protect the constitutional rights of an indigent population in need of legal counsel and feel damn good about yourself at the end of the day.

I was going to say you could look in to being a public defender. They don't make much at all compared to other lawyers but they do a lot of good defending the people who couldn't defend themselves.
Although you'll also have to take on cases that trouble you deeply, and that could take a serious toll on your psyche.
