Coming back for a second run! (Pics at end)

Hey there,
Coming back to the Shroomery after a ten year break from mycology! Used to knowk a guy who grew under his bed in junior high. He used PF tek in a small toolbox under the bed. He acheived average success, and then took a break. The shroomery was his sole source of education and support. And I *ahem* HE thanks you all
After years, he has revved up interest again. New substrates, techniques, chambers and strains now. Started off making WBS quarts, with a syringe bought locally, of PF classic.
The part that I think is reportable, is he is using no pressure cooker, only boiling, and has had 0 contams thus far. I think this is due to the sterile procedure and habits. He also told me that he will give me a decent report of the methods used to obtain the results.
He hopes to share through me the successes and failures of the new run. Good to be back! I've been lurking for a month or so now, so I kind already know you guys.

Lots and lots of things have changed in ten years, there's new ways to grow more and better mushrooms with less work. But if your method is working, then rock on. Post pics when you can please!

Thanks for the welcome. I beleive next week there should be enough spawn to make a decent tray, WBS->Coir/Verm/Coffee (and a buffer if i can find it). Kinda debating what sort of FC to make, as there are tubs of all sorts in the basement, as well as a good sized aquarium..
I will take pics of the jars when they are done, and the steps along the way. A couple of the jars blasted off, and a couple are slower, so I think I may only do one tray at a time.
Also hoping to make a decent LC while I can out of the mycelium in the fast colonizing jars. Recently found that I have access to syringes, fedex express envelopes (tyvek), vermiculite and a few other handy items at my work..
Jars are boiled, with tyvek filter, and using foam makeup sponges as an inoculation filter. First jars used only one hole, with mixed success, and the next phase will include three holes to help with some gas exchange.
After this experimental test run (with new age methods, which I am diggin'), my buddy is going to run a full dozen quarts wbs, and another dozen pints of BRFxVerm. Should have a decent rotating chedule in a month or so.
Peace!

I'd use gypsum rather than coffee. And if I was spawning WBS to coir/verm/gypsum, I'd consider using a hybrid MSG tub for fruiting.

I am almost ready to spawn, incorporating gypsum from some drywall I smashed bashed and put through a strainer. Still debating whether a monotub, or trays in an alternate FC, or buckets. Also did some pints of BRF/V last weekend, and doing a cook with friend A. Hes got LC for me, I have 10cc diluted MS, and a 1/2P of WBS spawn for him B+:PF respectively.is
Loving the hobby *my friend* has been getting back into! Pics soon, sorry guys i smoke too much dope..

That pic is just before harvest, the first flush was about an ounce. In that tray it was spawned 1:3 about two quarts total. WBS coir verm coffee gypsum.

You betcha! It seemed about the right size for the job. And this way my fiance wont be able to attempt another tuna caserole..
First flush was about an ounce. I had quite a few that were not fully matured, and I think I may delay harvest next time by another day after the leading mushroom breaks veil.

Ends up not making a lot of difference. Beyond a point, they grow by pumping water into existing structures. Not by adding mass or magic. They change shape but the dry weight stays about the same.

If I only harvested the larger ones, would the smaller ones keep going? I was thinking of either doing that or just waiting longer, but now I'm not too sure.
*EDIT* I re-evaluated what you said, and if I understand correctly, you mean the smaller shrooms , to a point, will have a similar mass to shrooms allowed to grow for longer?
That seems to make sense. They did all look similar when they were dried. At which point do you think they stop adding non-water mass?

You can do that too. But it still won't really make much difference. Try it, you'll see what I mean.

Cool Doc thanks for the tip. Looks like theres an early canopy to harvest late tomorrow then. The largest one is 56mm, smaller ones around 20-30mm. No broken veils yet.

Happens around "mushroom puberty", as the pins start to become maturing mushrooms. Pins grow new cells furiously, then it drops off. You want to let them grow into young mushrooms, don't pick the pins if you can avoid it. But the final harvest won't vary a lot if you harvest all at once vs trying to pick as you go.

Right on. Just finished reading some other related threads and I think I got the concept down now. I don't need to print this next tray so I think I will pick earlier.
Your advice is golden!

Let the veils start to open. I let a tub go until one or two caps are dropping spores, then pick the whole tub.

Here is #2, this morning before she was picked.
Around 450 wet g.
And some of young sexy number 3

I noticed the caps seem a bit darker on this third tray.
